British wheelchair tennis pairs to compete at Wimbledon

Great Britain will have two wheelchair tennis doubles pairings at The Championships, Wimbledon for the first time as Lucy Shuker, Jordanne Whiley, Gordon Reid and Marc McCarroll were today awarded wild cards.

Both pairs narrowly missed out on being given a place by right as the world's top three duos received an automatic spot based on the men's and women's ITF world rankings published on May 14th.

It's the second year running that doubles world No.8 Shuker and No.10 Whiley have played on the grass courts of SW19 and Shuker will be hoping to recreate the same success that saw her finish runner-up in 2009 and 2010 with Australian partner Daniela di Toro.

"I'm really looking forward to playing at Wimbledon again this year and the crowds there are always great to play in front of. Lucy and I have won two ITF1 Series doubles titles in the last month so we are confident of improving on last year's result of fourth," said Whiley.

Reid, ranked world No.11 in doubles, has also played at Wimbledon teaming up with David Phillipson in 2008, while McCarroll will be making his debut at the event.

"I can't wait to be playing at Wimbledon for the first time in my career as it's one of the most iconic tennis venues in the world. Gordon and I have been playing really well recently winning our first ITF1 title together at the South African Open and we're looking forward to taking on some of the best players in the world," added McCarroll.

Also in the field are the reigning Doubles Masters champions, Tom Egberink of the Netherlands and Michael Jeremiasz of France.

The women's entries include recent Roland Garros champions Esther Vergeer and Marjolein Buis of the Netherlands, who are currently unbeaten in the two tournaments they have played together so far.

A total of £34,000 in prize money is on offer in 2012 for the wheelchair tennis doubles competition and the event will be played from Friday 6th July to Sunday 8th July.
