London 2012 venue hosts first Disability Tennis Festival

Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre held its first Disability Tennis Festival, giving young people from 13 Primary Schools across the London Boroughs of Tower Hamlets, Hackney, Newham and Waltham Forest the chance to use the world class facilities for free.

Eighty students enjoyed playing tennis on the indoor courts during the Tennis Foundation-funded event on Tuesday 11 November at the venue on Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park which hosted Wheelchair Tennis during London 2012.

Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre will also host the NEC Wheelchair Tennis Masters later this month, welcoming back the world’s best to play on these indoor courts which are the same standard as those used for the US Open.

Jack Pringle, Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre Sports Development Officer said: “Hosting events such as this Disability Tennis Festival are an integral part of delivering a genuine legacy from London 2012.

“We work with partners such as Tennis Foundation, Lawn Tennis Association and England Hockey to provide opportunities for everyone to enjoy playing tennis and hockey on our world class courts and pitches.

“It was great to see the indoor courts full of youngsters during the Disability Tennis Festival. Everyone was enjoying themselves and we hope that they will continue playing the sport afterwards.”

The London Borough of Tower Hamlets was represented by pupils from: Harry Gosling School, Malmesbury Primary School, Ben Jonson Primary School, Steborn Primary School, Marner Primary School, Bangabandhu Primary School and Bygrove Primary School

Hackney was represented by pupils from: London Fields Primary School and The Garden School.

Newham was represented by pupils from: Star Primary School, Ravenscroft Primary School and Cleves Primary School.

Waltham Forest was represented by pupils from South Grove Primary School.

Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre currently runs wheelchair tennis sessions every Thursday, 6pm to 8pm for participants over the age of 12. In addition tennis sessions for all age groups at the centre are designed to be fully inclusive providing an opportunity for everyone to play the sport.
