Hewett and Shuker claim German Open titles

Alfie Hewett and Lucy Shuker claimed three titles between them at the German Open after securing a British double in the men’s and women’s singles on the final day of play.

Shuker completed the ITF 2 Series tournament with both singles and doubles titles after dethroning Germany’s defending champion Katharina Kruger in the women’s singles final. Top seed and wold No.7 Shuker edged a tense deciding set for a 6-1, 2-6, 7-5 victory and her second singles title of 2015.

British No 2 Hewett successfully retained the men’s singles title after ending the tournament having beaten both the top two seeds. Following his victory over world No.10 and top seed Tom Egberink in the semi-finals, Hewett defeated second seed Frederic Cattaneo of France 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 in the final and has now won four singles titles this season, three of them at ITF 2 Series level.

Alfie Hewett and Lucy Shuker won through to the men’s and women’s singles finals at the German Open before Shuker claimed the women’s doubles title partnering Ju-Yeon Park.

Third seed Hewett kept his men’s single title defence alive with a fine semi-final performance that saw him beat Dutch world No. 10 and top seed Tom Egberink for the second time this season.

Hewett followed up May’s Internazionale d’Italia singles final victory over Egberink with a 6-2 3-6, 6-3 win in Berlin that earns the 17-year-old British No. 2 and world No. 2 junior a final against French second seed Frederic Cattaneo.

Top seed Shuker will play Germany’s defending champion Katharina Kruger in the women’s singles final after earning a 6-3 6-3 win over Louise Hunt in their all-British semi-final.

Later in the day Shuker and her Korean partner Park fought back to win a thrilling women’s singles final against Hunt and Kruger. The top seeds eventually edged to a 1-6, 7-5, (10-7) victory after a deciding championship tie-break.

However, Hewett’s hopes of retaining the men’s doubles title ended in him collecting runners-up honours this time alongside his Austrian partner Marin Legner. Hewett and Leger lost out to Cattaneo and Egberink 6-2, 6-1.

Lucy Shuker and Louise Hunt have guaranteed that there will be a Brit in the women’s singles final at the German Open, while Alfie Hewett is also through to the men’s singles semi-finals.

A Brit is also guaranteed to lift the women's doubles title, with Shuker and Haunt also on opposite sides of the net in the doubles final, while Hewett is into the men's doubles final. 

Tops seed Shuker beat her doubles partner Ju-Yeon Park of Korea 6-3, 6-1 to set up the all-British semi-final against fourth seed Hunt, who won her quarter-final against Russia’s Ludmila Bubnova 6-1, 6-3.

Hewett powered to a 6-3, 6-0 quarter-final win over Poland’s former world No. 3 Tadeusz Kruszelnicki and the British No. 2 and tournament third seed will now face Dutch top seed and world No. 10 Tom Egberink for a place in the semi-finals.

Top seeds Shuker and Park won their doubles semi-final against Japan's Kanako Domori and South Africa's Mariska Venter 6-2, 6-2. Second seeds Hunt and Katharina Kruger reached their second doubles final in successive weeks after earning a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Switzerland's Gabriel Buehler and Austria's Margrit Fink.

Hewett and Austria's Martin Legner, top seeds for the men's doubles, will play second seeds Frederic Cattaneo of France and Egberink for the title after winning their semi-final against Polish fourth seeds Kamil Fabisiak and Kruszelnicki 6-3, 6-3.

Alfie Hewett, Lucy Shuker and Louise Hunt all made winning starts in Berlin as they reached the men’s and women’s singles quarter-finals and the men’s and women’s doubles semi-finals.

Hewett will play Poland’s former world No. 3 Tadeusz Kruszelnicki for a place in the men’s singles semifinals after beating Austria’s Dan Kleckner 6-3, 6-1.

Shuker faces her doubles partner-Yeon Park of Korea in a bid to reach the women’s single semi-finals after the British No. 2 and top seed earned an opening 6-3, 6-3 win over South Africa’s Mariska Venter. Louise Hunt, fourth seed for the women’s singles, eased to a 6-1, 6-1 win over Denmark’s Louise Willereley-Olsen  and will now take on Russia’s Ludmila Bubnova as the British No. 3 and Shuker attempt to set up an all-British semi-final.

Hewett also faces Kruszelnicki in the semifinals of the men’s doubles. Top seeds Hewett and Martin Legner of Austria won their quarter-final against German’s Sven Hiller and Peter Seidl 6-2, 6-1 ahead of playing Polish fourth seeds Kamil Fabisiak and Kruszelnicki.

Meanwhile, Shuker and Park reached the last four of the women’s doubles after beating French duo Charlotte Famin and Emmanuelle Morch 6-3, 6-4. The top seeds play Japan’s Kanako Domori and Venter for a place in the final. A final featuring two Brits is still a possibility after Hunt and Katharina Kruger raced to a 6-0, 6-0 win over Germany’s Hannah-Louisa Schmidt and Willersley-Olsen. The second seeds play Gabriela Buehler of Switzerland and Margrit Fink of Austria in the semi-finals. 

However, British hopes of success in the quad singles and doubles came to an end. Richard Green bowed out of the quad singles to Japanese top seed Mitsuteru Moroishi, who advanced to the quarter-finals 6-0, 6-2. Ian Payne also lost out to seeded opposition despite a fine effort against Italian seventh seed Antonio Raffaele. Raffaele won 6-4, 6-3 to reach the last eight.

Green and Payne also played the top seeds in the quad doubles, slipping to a 6-2, 6-1 loss to Israel’s Itay Erenlib and Greg Hasterok of the USA. Shaw paired up with Austria’s Markus Wallner for the quad doubles quarter-finals, but they also bowed out after a 6-2, 6-4 loss to Victor Garcia Asensio of Spain and Giuseppe Polidori of Italy for a place in the last four.

Richard Green advanced to the last 16 of the quad singles on the opening day of play in Berlin as well as partnering Ian Payne to reach the quad doubles quarter-finals.  

Green beat Nick Nobbe of Germany 6-4, 7-6(1) to book a meeting with top seed Mitsuteru Moroishi of Japan. Green and Payne then produced a fine effort to defeat South Africa’s Bongani Dlamini and Takahiro Koga of Japan 7-6(5), 6-1, earning a last eight contest against the top seeds Itay Erenlib of Israel and Greg Hasterok of the USA.

James Shaw will contest the quad consolation singles after bowing out of the main draw against South Africa’s Bongani Dlamini 6-3, 6-4. Shaw and Austria’s Markus Wallner of Austria had a bye into the quarter-finals of the quad doubles and play fourth seeds Victor Garcia Asensio of Spain and Giuseppe Polidori of Italy for a place in the last four.

Meanwhile, following byes for Lucy Shuker, Louise Hunt and Alfie Hewett, Shuker leant that her first women’s singles opponent of the week will be former world No.1 junior Mariska Venter after the South African won her first round contest. Shuker, Hunt and Hewett all begin their men’s and women’s singles challenges on the second day of play, when Payne also opens his quad singles campaign.

Hewett and Martin Legner are top seeds for the men’s doubles, while Shuker and Hunt are in the top two seeded partnerships for the women’s doubles along with their respective partners Ju-Yeon Park and Katharina Kruger. Shuker and Park look to add to title success in Korea earlier this summer, while Hunt and Kruger will bid to land their third doubles title together in 2015 after pairing up to win last week’s Austrian Open women’s doubles crown.

Alfie Hewett, Lucy Shuker, Louise Hunt, Ian Payne, James Shaw and Richard Green contest the men's, women's and quad singles and doubles events at the German Open in Berlin.

Hewett is third seed for the men’s singles and after a bye will play Dan Kleckner of Austria or Marc vom Ende of Germany for a place in the quarter-finals.

Shuker and Hunt are also seeded and also have byes into the last 16 of the women’s singles, with top seed Shuker to play South Africa’s Mariska Venter or Pauline Helouin of France for a place in the last eight and fourth seed Hunt to face Denmark’s Louise Willerslev-Olsen.

Shaw and Green play South Africa’s Bongani Dlamini and Germany’s Nick Nobbe in a bid to join Payne in the last 16 of the quad singles. After a bye, Payne meets Italian seventh seed Antonio Raffaele.
