Cotterill and Lapthorne finish runners-up at Open de France

Antony Cotterill and Andy Lapthorne finished runners-up  in the quad doubles at the 2015 BNP Paribas Open de France as British interest in the event came to a close with Lapthorne narrowly missing out on a place in the quad singles final.

A year on from winning their first Super Series title together in Paris, top seeds Cotterill and Lapthorne slipped to a 6-1, 6-4 loss to second seeds Dylan Alcott of Australia and Lucas Sithole of South Africa in this year’s title decider.

Going into this week’s tournament Lapthorne was the only player to have beaten world No. 2 Alcott in singles competition so far this season and Britain’s world No. 3 made a bold attempt at repeating his victory over Alcott in the semi-finals of March’s Cajun Classic.  However, Alcott won a final set tie-break to advance to the final 4-6, 6-1, 7-6(5).

Andy Lapthorne is into the quad singles semi-finals in Paris and has partnered Antony Cotterill to the quad doubles final for the second successive year.

World No. 3 Lapthorne will play Australian world No. 2 Dylan Alcott in the singles semi-finals after winning his all-British quarter-final against Jamie Burdekin 6-4, 6-0.  Lapthorne goes into the last four as the only player to have beaten Alcott in singles competition so far this year.

Later in the day top seeds and defending champions Cotterill and Lapthorne beat American third seeds Bryan Barten and David Wagner 7-6 (4), 3-6, 7-5 to nook their place in the quad doubles final against second seeds Alcott and Lucas Stihole.

However, British interest in the women’s singles and doubles came to an end, despite Jordanne Whiley making a tremendous effort against Dutch world No. 3 Aniek van Koot. However, van Koot battled back from a set down to prevail 3-6, 7-5, 6-1.

Whiley and Shuker also bowed out to Dutch opposition in the women’s doubles as Marjolein Buis and Michaela Spaanstra moved into the final 7-6(4), 6-2.

A Brit is guaranteed a place in the semifinals of the quad singles in Paris after Andy Lapthorne, Jamie Burdekin and Antony Cotterill all advanced to the quarter-finals on the third day of play in Paris.

Meanwhile, Jordanne Whiley moved into the women’s singles quarter-finals and partnered Lucy Shuker to the semi-finals of the women’s doubles as defending champions Cotterill and Lapthorne progressed to the quad doubles semi-finals.

Lapthorne and Burdekin will meet in the last eight of the quad singles after world No. 3 Lapthorne beat the USA’s Bryan Barten and 6-3, 6-4 and world No. 5 Burdekin opened his singles campaign by beating Brazil’s Ymanitu Silva 6-4, 6-0. World No. 7 Cotterill also advanced in straight sets, beating Italy’s Giuseppe Polidori 6-0, 6-3 to set up a quarter-final against Australian world No. 2 Dylan Alcott.

After waiting for two days for her opening match, too, Whiley eventually dominated a deciding set against Colombia’s Angelia Bernal for a 6-4, 3-6 6-1 win to book a women’s singles quarter-final against Dutch world No. 3 Aniek van Koot. However, Shuker bowed out to Dutch opposition, beaten 6-2, 7-5 by Diede De Groot.

Tops seeds Shuker and Whiley will play Dutch fourth seeds Marjolein Buis and Michaela Spaanstra for a place in the women’s doubles final after beat beating Chile’s Macarena Cabrillana and Maria Diaz 6-0, 6-1.

Cotterill and Lapthorne began their quad doubles title defence by beating Spain’s Victor Garcia Asensio and Polidori 6-4, 7-6(4) ahead of playing American third seeds Bryan Barten and David Wagner in the semi-finals. However, Burdekin and Israel’s Shraga Weinberg bowed out 6-2, 6-1 against the USA’s Greg Hasterok and Sweden’s Anders Hard.

Marc McCarroll and David Phillipson also bowed out of the men’s singles and doubles against seeded opposition. McCarroll slipped to a 6-1, 6-4 loss to Belgian word No. 5 Joachim Gerard in the men’s singles as Phillipson was beaten 6-2, 6-4 by Dutch world No. 7 Maikel Scheffers. Later in the day McCarroll and Phillipson made a bold attempt at taking top seeds Stephane Houdet and Shingo Kunieda to three sets, but the reigning Australian Open champions eventually progressed to the doubles semi-finals 6-2, 7-5.

Marc McCarroll and David Phillipson moved into the men’s doubles quarter-finals on the second day of play in Antony, but Alfie Hewett saw his singles and doubles challenges come to an end.

McCarroll and Phillipson will meet top seeds Stephane Houdet of France and Shingo Kunieda of Japan in the last eight of the men’s doubles after beating Argentina’s Ezequiel Casco and Poland’s Kamil Fabisiak 6-2, 6-2.

Hewett and Dutchman Ricky Molier bowed out of the men’s doubles 6-2, 6-0 against fourth seed Joachim Gerard and Stefan Olsson, with Hewett next set to partner Gerard at Wimbledon in two weeks’ time. Meanwhile, Hewett’s bid to beat Dutch world No. 9 Tom Egberink for the second time this season ended with the Brit slipping to a 6-2, 7-5 loss on this occasion in the second round of the men’s singles.

McCarroll and Phillipson play their men’s singles second round matches against Gerard and Maikel Scheffers on the third day of play, when Jordanne Whiley and Lucy Shuker also begin their women’s singles challenges against Colombia’s Angelica Bernal and Diede de Groot of the Netherlands.

Andy Lapthorne, Jamie Burdekin and Antony Cotterill also open their quad singles campaigns against the USA’s Bryan Barten, Brazil’s Ymanitu Silva and Italy’s Giuseppe Polidori respectively.

The Brits also begin their women’s doubles and quad doubles challenges on the third day of play, with London 2012 bronze medallists Shuker and Whiley, the top seeds for the women’s doubles, taking on Macarena Cabrillana and Maria Diaz of Chile. Cotterill and Lapthorne are top seeds for the quad doubles, while Burdekin and Israel’s Shraga Weinberg are fourth seeds for the quad doubles.

Marc McCarroll, Alfie Hewett and David Phillipson all eased into the second round of the men’s singles on the first day of play in Antony, Paris.

British No.2 McCarroll beat Switzerland’s Raphael Gremion 6-2, 6-0 and now meets Belgian fourth seed and world No. 5 Joachim Gerard for a place in the quarter-finals. Also in the bottom half of the draw Phillipson beat Spain’s Martin de la Puente 6-2, 6-4. Phillipson plays Dutch sixth seed Maikel Scheffers as he bids to claim a place in the last eight.

Hewett, currently the British No. 3, swept past Frenchman Gaetan Menguy 6-1, 6-2 in his opening match and will also now play Dutch opposition when he takes on eighth seed Tom Egberink.

Eight of Britain’s leading men’s, women’s and quad players line-up in Antony, Paris for the BNP Paribas Open de France, the fourth Super Series wheelchair tennis event of 2015.

British No.2 Marc McCarroll plays Raphael Germion of Switzerland in his opening men’s singles match in France. David Phillipson is drawn in the same quarter of the draw as McCarroll and faces Spain’s Martin de la Puente in his first round match.

British No.3 Alfie Hewett is drawn in the top half of the men’s draw and takes on Gaetan Menguy of France in his opening men’s singles match.

Jordanne Whiley and Lucy Shuker carry British hopes into the women’s singles and doubles in Antony. Both Brits have first round byes, with sixth seed Whiley to play either world No. 1 junior Viktoriia Lvova or a qualifier for a place in the last eight, while seventh seed Shuker will face either Marianna Lauro of Italy or Dutchwoman Diede de Groot.

Third seed Andy Lapthorne, fifth seed Jamie Burdekin and seventh seed Antony Cotterill are also all seeded for the quad singles, with each player having a bye in the bottom half of the draw. Cotterill and Lapthorne go into the tournament as defending champions in the quad doubles.
