Durham University and the University of Bath crowned BUCS Team Champions

Durham University and the University of Bath battled it out for top honours in the BUCS Team Championship Finals recently with Durham emerging victorious in the men’s event and Bath taking the spoils in the women’s.

The BUCS team event, which has involved 320 teams throughout the winter, came to a conclusion on what is known as ‘BUCS Big Wednesday’ as 43 finals across 12 sports took place at Loughborough University.

Durham comfortably beat Bath in the Men’s Championship final 10-2, while Bath gained revenge by beating Durham 8-4 in the Women’s Championship final, claiming their fourth successive title.

In the Trophy finals, the tier below the Championship final for those teams who finished the season outside the top two in their division, Durham University’s women’s second team defeated Cardiff University 10-2, whilst in the Men’s Trophy final the University of Warwick secured a narrow victory over the University of Sheffield 8-4.

Quentin Sloper, Head of Sport at Durham University said: “Winning the men’s team event is huge for us and something that would have been unthinkable five years ago. A big thank you has to go to the Tennis Foundation for all their support, without who we wouldn’t be in the position we are today. Next year we’ll be back for both titles!”

Durham's Director of Tennis Lucy Scott added: “I am so proud of the players and all of the Durham University tennis Club players for their hard work and commitment. It's been a great season.”

Bath's Director of Tennis Barry Scollo said: "I am delighted the girls have had such a terrific run. To win four years in a row is a terrific achievement and to see our boys step up a level and reach the final is also very encouraging."
