Brits win two doubles titles at Cajun Classic

Brits ended the Cajun Classic with two titles after Lucy Shuker partnered Germany’s Sabine Ellerbrock to win the women’s doubles on the last day of play, with Gordon Red finishing runner-up in the men’s singles and doubles and Jordanne Whiley finishing runner-up in the women’s singles and doubles.

Shuker and Ellerbrock caused a minor upset in the women’s doubles final as the second seeds earned a hard won 6-3, 7-6(5) victory over top seeds Whiley and Marjolein Buis of the Netherlands. For Shuker it was a second ITF 1 doubles title in successive weeks after partnering Whiley to victory at the Pensacola Open.

Earlier in the day world No. 5 Whiley put up a fine performance in the women’s singles final against world No. 4 Ellerbrock, but the German top seed gained a narrow 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 win.

Reid’s bid for back to back ITF 1 Series singles and doubles titles ended against French opposition in both cases. The top seeded Brit met in-form former world No. 1 Michael Jeremiasz in the singles final, with Jeremiasz claiming the title 7-5, 6-4. Later in the day Reid and Joachim Gerard’s bid for a second successive men’s doubles title saw the Pensacola Open champions take seconds seeds Nicolas Peifer and Jeremiasz to a deciding match tie-break before the French duo prevailed 3-6, 6-3, (10-2).

British No. 2 Marc McCarroll ended his tournament om a winning note after beating American Steve Baldwin 6-1, 6-1 in the men's consolation singles final, having met Jeremiasz in the first round of the main draw on the first day of competition in Baton Rouge.

Cajun Classic Draws

Jamie Burdekin and Andy Laptorne claimed the quad doubles title on the penultimate day of the Cajun Classic as Gordon Reid and Jordane Whiley moved into the men’s and women’s singles and doubles finals, with Lucy Shuker joining Whiley in the women’s doubles final.

Second seeds Burdekin and Lapthorne earned a thrilling victory in the quad doubles, beating American top seeds Nick Taylor and David Wagner 6-3, 3-6, (11-9) to give both Brits some compensation for slipping to semi-final and final losses to eventual quad singles champion Wagner. Earlier in the day Lapthorne had finished runner-up to Wagner in the quad singles after Wagner earned a 6-1, 6-0 win.

Reid remained on course in his men’s singles title defence with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over third seed Nicolas Peifer. The top seed will play another Frenchman, the unseeded former world No. 1 Michael Jeremiasz in the final as he bids to win back-to-back ITF 1 Series titles in successive week.

Second seed Whiley won her all-British women’s semi-final against Shuker 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 ahead of meeting top seed Sabine Ellerbrock of Germany in the final.

With a total of five Brits in the men’s and women’s doubles semi-finals, Reid and Belgium’s Joachim Gerard kept up their unbeaten record as a partnership with a tense 6-4, 3-6, (10-5) victory over Australia’s Adam Kellerman and Dutchman Maikel Scheffers. The top seeds meet seconds seeds Jeremiasz and Peifer in the final after French duo beat British No. 2 Marc McCarroll and South Africa’s Evans Maripa 6-0, 6-3.

Whiley and Dutchwoman Marjolein Buis raced through their women’s doubles semi-final against the USA’s Kaitlyn Verfuerth and Michaela Spaanstra of the Netherlands 6-0, 6-0. With a British winner already guaranteed in the women’s doubles, there were two Brits in the other semi-final as Shuker and Ellerbrock earned a comfortable 6-1, 6-0 win over Louise Hunt and her German partner Katharina Kruger.

McCarroll will go into the last day of play eyeing victory in the men’s consolation singles final. He plays Steve Baldwin after winning his semi-final against another American, Matthew DeVlieger, 6-0, 6-1.

Andy Lapthorne moved into the quad singles final as Jordanne Whiley and Lucy Shuker ensured there would be a Brit in the women’s singles final and Gordon Reid advanced to the men’s singles semi-finals on the third day of play.

Jamie Burdekin and Lapthorne are also into the quad doubles final, with Whiley, Shuker and Louise Hunt all into the women’s doubles semi-finals with different partners, guaranteeing that there will be a Brit in yet another final.

Lapthorne claimed his second career win over world No. 2 Dylan Alcott as the world No. 3 ended Alcott’s unbeaten sequence for 2015 with a 6-3, 1-6, 6-2 victory. Lapthorne himself remains unbeaten in Baton Rouge after winning the 2012 title and he will now play American world No. 1 David Wagner after Wagner ended any hopes of an all-British final this year by beating defending champion Burdekin 6-4, 6-0.

World No. 10 Shuker claimed her second win over world No. 8 Katharina Kruger in successive weeks, following up her 6-1, 6-0 win over the German at the Pensacola Open with a 6-3, 6-3 victory in Baton Rouge that earns her an all-British semi-final against second seed Whiley. Whiley was in fine form against eighth seed Francisca Mardones, the world No. 5 sweeping to a 6-0, 6-1 victory.

Top seed Reid moved another match closer to defending his men’s singles title when beating fifth seed Stefan Olsson of Sweden 6-2, 6-4. The world No. 3 will face French world No. 6 Nicolas Peifer in the semi-finals.

Whiley and Dutchwoman Marjolein Buis, the top seeds, beat Mexican duo Claudia Taboada and Rosalba Vazquez 6-1, 6-0 to earn a women’s doubles semi-final against fourth seeds Kaitlyn Verfuerth of the USA and Michaela Spaanstra of the Netherlands. Shuker and Hunt and their respective German partners will be on opposite sides of the net in the other women’s doubles semi after Shuker and Sabine Ellerbrock beat Johana Martinez and Kgothatso Montjane 6-3, 6-2. Third seeds Hunt and Kruger won their quarter-final against Americans Shelby Baron and Mackenzie Soldan 6-2, 6-4.

Second seeds Burdekin and Lapthorne defeated Guatemala’s Julio Rueda and Brazil’s Ymanitu Silva 6-3, 6-1 in their quad doubles final to set up their second final in successive weeks against American top seeds Nick Taylor and Wagner.

Marc McCarroll faces American Matthew DeVlieger in the men’s consolation singles semi-finals after winning his opening match in the event against Frenchman Patrice Meyer 6-0, 6-0.

Jamie Burdekin and Andy Lapthorne advanced to the quad singles and quad doubles semi-finals on the second day of the Cajun Classic as Gordon Reid, Jordanne Whiley and Lucy Shuker reached the men’s and women’s singles quarter-finals and Marc McCarroll joined Reid in the men’s doubles semi-finals.

Defending champion Burdekin will play world No.  1 David Wagner in his quad semi-final in a rematch of the 2014 final in Baton Rouge after defeating Brazil’s Ymanitu Silva 6-1, 6-0. Third seed Lapthorne plays world No.2 Dylan Alcott for a place in the final after beating Canada’s Mika Ishikawa 6-0, 6-2.

Reid began his men’s title defence with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Benjamin Rouyer of France and goes on to meet Swedish fifth seed Stefan Olsson in the last eight,  but David Phillipson saw his bid for a quarter-final place end against Dutch fourth seed Maikel Scheffers 6-1, 6-0.

As the women’s singles seeds began their tournament, second seed Whiley beat Mexico’s Claudia Taboada 6-2, 6-0 ahead of facing Francisca Mardones of Chile in the quarter-finals. Sixth seed Shuker also beat American Emmy Kaiser 6-2, 6-0 and will now bid to try and beat German world No.8 Katharina Kruger for the second successive week. However, despite an encouraging first set against world No. 4 Sabine Ellerbrock, Louise Hunt bowed out to the German top seeds 6-4, 6-2.    

Burdekin and Lapthorne, second seeds for the quad doubles, edged past Israel’s Itay Erenlib and Haim Lev 3-6, 7-5, (11-9) to book their place in the last four against Guatemala’s Julio Rueda and Silva.

Reid and Belgium’s Joachim Gerard, who are bidding for their second title in successive weeks, came through their opening men’s doubles contest against Philliipson and Olsson 6-2, 6-2. They play third seeds Adam Kellerman and Maikel Scheffers for a place in the final. McCarroll, who is set to begin the men’s consolation singles as top seed, partners South Africa’s Evans Maripa in the men’s doubles and the fourth seed made it two wins in two days when beating Brazil’s Rafael Medeiros and Daniel Rodriugues 6-2, 6-3 to set up a semi-final against French second seeds Michael Jeremiasz and Nicolas Peifer.      

Top seeds Whiley and Dutchwoman Marjolein Buis, second seeds Shuker and Ellerbrock and third seeds Hunt and Kruger all have byes into the women’s doubles quarter-finals.

Four of the five Brits in action on the opening day of play in Baton Rouge advanced in their singles events as Jamie Burdekin and Andy Lapthorne reached the quad singles quarter-finals and David Phillipson and Louise Hunt reached the last 16 of the men’s and women’s singles.

Fourth Burdekin started the defence of his quad singles title with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Israel’s Haim Lev that sets up a last eight contest against Brazil’s Ymanitu Silva. Meanwhile third seed Lapthorne will meet Canada’s Mika Ishikawa for a place in the semi-finals after earning the perfect start to his challenge, with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over American qualifier Steven Baxter.

Phillipson also beat the USA’s Anthony Lara 6-0, 6-0 to reach the second round of the men’s singles. Phillipson will play Dutch fourth seed Maikel Scheffers for a quarter-final berth, but British No. 2 Marc McCarroll slipped to a 6-1, 6-2 loss to former world No. 1 Michael Jeremiasz, having also come up against the Frenchman in the second round of last week’s Pensacola Open.

Defending champion Gordon Reid was the only one of the seeded players to have a first round bye in the men’s singles. The world No. 3 will play Frenchman Benjamin Rouyer in his opening match of the week.

With Jordanne Whiley and Lucy Shuker also having byes in the women’s singles ahead of meeting Mexico’s Claudia Taboada and the USA’s Emmy Kaiser respectively, Hunt will play German top seed Sabine Ellerbrock for a place in the quarter-finals after easing past Dutch qualifier Willemien Smits 6-0, 6-1.

Gordon Reid and Jamie Burdekin start this year’s Cajun Classic aiming to retain the men’s singles and quad singles titles. Jordanne Whiley also shared in the women’s doubles title in 2014, with Lucy Shuker runner-up. Eight Brits contest this year’s tournament.

Burdekin’s victory last year came after beating American world No. 1 David Wagner in the final and the two players are draw in the same half of the draw this week, with fourth seed Burdekin due to open his challenge against Israel’s Haim Lev. Third seed Andy Lapthorne will play a qualifier.

With Burdekin, Reid and Shuker all doubles runners-up last year, Reid starts this year’s ITF 1 event bidding for back-to-back singles and doubles titles after Brits won three titles at last week’s Pensacola Open. Reid starts the defence of his Cajun Classic title with a bye before facing one of two French players. British No. 2 and seventh seed Marc McCarroll faces French former world No. 1 Michael Jeremiasz in the first round after they also met in the second round in Pensacola last week. David Phillipson plays American Anthony Lara.

Second seed Whiley and sixth seed Shuker, who also play doubles with different partners this week after pairing up for victory together in Pensacola last week, have first round byes in the women’s singles. Whiley faces Chile’s Maria Diaz or Mexico’s Claudia Taboada in her opening match, with Shuker set to play one of two American players, Emmy Kaiser or Marianne Page. British No. 3 Louise Hunt will play a qualifier.
