Reid and Whiley net Japan Open doubles titles

British players finished the 2015 Japan Open with two titles and two runners-up places after world No. 3 Gordon Reid was runner-up to Shingo Kunieda in the men's singles.

Third seed Reid, who was contesting the sixth Super Series singles final of his career, slipped to a 6-2, 6-3 loss to world No. 1 and defending champion Kunieda, who Reid had partnered to win the men's doubles.

The penultimate day of the Japan Open brought tremendous success for the Brits as Gordon Reid reached the men’s singles final and won the men’s doubles title with Japan’s Shingo Kunieda, while Jordanne Whiley and Yui Kamiji won their second Super Series women’s doubles title together as Lucy Shuker finished runner-up.

Reid and Kunieda beat second seeds Michael Jeremiasz of France and Maikel Scheffers of the Netherlands 6-1, 6-1 in the men’s doubles final as Reid claimed the third Super Series doubles title of his career.

The British No. 1 and world No. 3 will now bid to win his second Super Series singles crown when he takes on world No. 1 and defending champion Kuenida in Sunday’s men’s singles final in Iizuka.  

Reid earned his sixth career win over French world No. 2 Houdet 6-4, 6-0 in his semi-final to book a place in his sixth Super Series singles final and he now bids to add to his first singles crown at Super Series level, which he secured at the 2014 Sydney International Open.

Whiley also claimed the third Super Series doubles title of her career and her second with Kamiji as the winners of the last five Grand Slam women’s doubles titles edged past second seeds Shuker and Sabine Ellerbrock of Germany 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in their final in Iizuka.

Gordon Reid moved into the men’s singles semi-finals and men’s doubles final as Jordanne Whiley and Lucy Shuker ensured that there will a British winner in the women’s doubles after both progressed to the final with their respective partners

Reid beat sixth seed Michael Jeremiasz 6-0, 6-2 in his singles quarter-final and will now face a second successive French opponent when he plays world No. 2 Stephane Houdet for a place in the final.

Top seeds Reid and Shingo Kunieda will play second seeds Jeremiasz and Dutchman Maikel Scheffers for the men’s doubles title after Reid and Kunieda won their semi-final against French third seeds Frederic Cattaneo and Stephane Houdet 6-1, 7-5.

Whiley and Yui Kamiji, winners of the last five Grand Slam titles together, eased into the women’s doubles final with a 6-0 6-1 victory over the fourth seeds Miho Nijo of Japan and Ju-Yeon Park of Korea. Shuker and Sabine Ellerbrock also raced into the final after beating Japanese third seeds Tomomi Miyama and Kanako Domori 6-0 6-0.

However, Whiley bowed out of the women’s singles in the semi-finals after slipping to a 6-4, 6-2 loss to Dutch second seed and world No. 3 Aniek van Koot.

Jordanne Whiley reached the women’s singles semi-finals and joined Lucy Shuker in the women’s double semi-finals as Gordon Reid booked his place in the men’s singles quarter-finals and men’s doubles semi-finals.

Whiley beat Chinese teenager Ziying Wang 7-5, 6-1 to set up a women’s singles semi-final against Dutch second seed Aniek van Koot and then partnered Yui Kamiji to beat Japan’s Naomi Ishimoto and  Manami Tanaka 6-0, 6-0 to earn their semi-final against fourth seeds Miho Nijo of Japan and Ju-Yeon Park of Korea.

Shuker and Germany’s Sabine Ellerbrock also won their women’s doubles quarter-final 6-0, 6-0, defeating Thailand’s Chanungarn Techamaneewat and Wang. They will play Japanese third seeds Kanako Domori and Tomomi Miyama for a place in the final. However, earlier in the day Shuker’s singles challenge came to an end when she slipped to a 6-2 6-4 quarter-final loss to world No. 4 Ellerbrock.

World No. 3 Reid will take on French sixth seed Michael Jeremiasz for a place in the men’s doubles semi-finals after beating Japan’s Takuya Miki 6-2, 6-3 in the second round.

Reid and Shingo Kunieda clinched their second 6-1, 6-1 win in successive days in the men’s doubles quarter-finals, beating Ho Won Im and Ji-Hwan Lee of Korea. The top seeds will play French third seeds Frederic Cattaneo and Stephane Houdet for a place in the final.

Jordanne Whiley, Lucy Shuker and Gordon Reid all got their Japan Open challenges underway with comfortable wins, Whiley and Shuker moving into the women’s singles quarterfinals and Reid earning his place in the second round of the men’s singles.

After her first round bye fourth seed Whiley beat Japan’s Emi Suda 6-1, 6-2 and now faces China’s Ziying Wang in the women’s semi-finals. Fifth seed Shuker will play third seed Sabine Ellerbrock of Germany for a place in the last four after beating Japan’s Manami Tanaka also by a score of 6-1, 6-2.

Reid powered to a 6-0, 6-0 win over Malaysia’s Abu Samah Borhan ahead of playing Japan’s Takuya Miki for a place in the last eight of the men’s singles.

All three Brits are part of seeded partnerships for the men's and women's doubles. Whiley and her Grand Slam-winning Yuii Kamiji are top seeds for the women's doubles, with Shuker and Germany's Sabine Ellerbrock the second seeds. Both partnerships have byes into the quarter-finals.

Reid and Kunieda are top seeds for the men's doubles and reached the quarter-finals with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Miki and Australia's Ben Weekes. They play Korea's Ho Won Im and Ji-Hwan Lee for a place in the semi-finals.

Gordon Reid, Jordanne Whiley and Lucy Shuker fly the flag for Britain at the 31st Japan Open, the third Super Series event of the year on the UNIQLO Wheelchair Tennis Tour, which takes place in Iizuka, Fukouka, on 12th to 17th May.

Reid returns to Iizuka for the first time since meeting world No. 1 Shingo in the second round of the men’s singles in 2012. On that occasion Kunieda edged to the win and Reid again lines up alongside the Japanese top seed and world No. 2 Stephane Houdet in a field that features five world top ten players. Third seed Reid is drawn to meet Malaysia’s Abu Samah Borhan in the first round.

Five of the world’s top ten also line-up for the women’s singles, including world No. 5 Whiley and world No.9 Shuker. Whiley is one of four of the world’s top five vying for the women’s title in Iizuka, with the field head by Whiley’s Grand Slam-winning doubles partner and world No. 1 Yui Kamiji and Dutch world No. 2 Aniek van Koot.

Whiley and Shuker are drawn in opposite halves of the draw, with fourth seed Whiley to play Japan’s Emi Suda or Chinese Taipei’s Hui-Ling Su in her opening match after a first round bye. Shuker is fifth seed and also has a bye into the round of 16, where she will play one of two Japanese players, Manami Tanaka or Maiko Yamamoto.
