Shuker and McCarroll earn Korea Open titles

Brits won three titles at the Korean Open, the first of three back-to-back ITF 1 or ITF 2 annual wheelchair tennis events in Korea, with Lucy Shuker securing both the women’s singles and women’s doubles titles and Marc McCarroll winning the men’s doubles.

Antony Cotterill also claimed one of the biggest wins of his career when he defeated world No. 6 Nick Taylor of the USA en route to the quad singles final and also finished runner-up in the quad doubles.

Top seed for the women’s singles, world No. 9 Shuker beat Emmanuelle Morch of France 6-0, 6-3, Ju-Yeon Park of Korea 7-5, 6-3 and third seed Kanako Domori of Japan 6-4, 6-2 to reach the women’s singles final before being awarded a walkover ahead of her scheduled title decider against South African second seed Kgothatso Montjane.

Shuker and Park were second seeds for the women’s doubles and reached the final for the loss of just three games before going on to beat Chile’s Macarena Cabrillana and the USA’s Dana Mathewson 6-2, 6-0.

McCarroll and Tom Egberink of the Netherlands were also second seeds for the men’s doubles and after coming from a set down to beat Korean duo Ha-Gel Lee and Sang-Ho Oh 3-6, 6-0, (10-2) in their quarter-final they defeated South African fourth seeds Leon Els and Evans Maripa 6-1, 6-3 in the semi-finals. McCarroll and Egberink completed victory with a 7-6(0), 6-4 win over Japanese top seeds Satoshi Saida and Takashi Sanada.

McCarroll came through two tough three set matches to beat Lee and fourth seed Yoshinobu Fujimoto in the men’s singles and provided top seed and world No. 7 Sanada with a stern test in the semi-finals before Sanada advanced to the final 6-4, 6-4 and went on to lift the title.

Straight sets wins for Cotterill over Chinese Taipei’s Tzu-Hsuan Huang and Young-Mok Yu set up a semi-final against London 2012 bronze medallist and second seed Taylor, but Cotterill produced a fine performance to beat Taylor 6-3, 6-2 to reach the final. Cotterill finished runner-up to South African top seed and world No. 4 Lucas Sithole, who won the final 6-2, 6-1.

Cotterill and Korea’s Kyu-Seung Kim also reached the quad doubles final, edging through their semi-final against Ho Sang Wang and Yu 6-0, 3-6, (10-7). However, American top seeds Bryan Barten and Taylor took the title 6-4, 6-2.
