Reid lifts third Open de la Baie de Somme title

04/10/15

Gordon Reid produced a magnificent performance to lift his third successive Open de la Baie de Somme men’s singles title in Rue, beating second seed and world No. 3 Nicolas Peifer of France 6-1, 6-0.

World No. 5 Reid led 3-0 before Peifer gained his one and only game of the final and although Peifer had chances to get on the board again in the fifth game of the second set Reid proved more than equal to the challenge to claim his third singles title of 2015 in just 40 minutes.

“I'm very pleased with my performances this week and my level of play through the event,” said Reid. “To get three wins in such a fashion in a row against three top players is a great confidence boost for me leading up to the NEC Masters in December.

“I have learnt a lot here and will use that to work on specifics in practice over the next few weeks and hopefully use that as a platform to produce some more excellent performances at the Masters and in 2016.”

Lucy Shuker and Jordanne Whiley

Gordon Reid reached his third successive men’s singles final at the Open de la Baie de Somme after beating world No.2 Stephen Houdet for the second time in two matches this season.

Meanwhile, Lucy Shuker and Jordanne Whiley finished runners-up in a thrilling women’s doubles final after Whiley bowed out of the women’s singles in the semi-finals.

World No. 5 Reid broke Houdet’s serve in the eighth game before serving out the opening set. The British No. 1 broke again to take a 4-3 second set lead en route to a 6-3, 6-3victory that will now see him play another Frenchman, world No. 3 Nicolas Peifer, in Sunday afternoon’s final.

The women’s doubles final was an exciting contest that saw London 2102 bronze medallists and seconds seeds Shuker and Whiley take the last four games of the second set to force the match tie-break. The decider saw the British duo build on a 6-3 lead to earn two match points at 9-7, but they were unable to take their chances and Dutch top seeds Jiske Griffioen and Aniek van Koot went on to earn a 6-4, 3-6 (12-10) victory.

Earlier in the day Whiley slipped to a 6-2, 7-6(1) loss to world No. 2 van Koot in their women’s singles semi-final.

Gordon Reid celebrated his 24th birthday with a straight sets win over Stefan Olsson of Sweden to reach the men’s singles semi-finals at the Open de la Baie de Somme as Lucy Shuker and Jordanne Whiley booked their place in the women’s doubles final.

Reid began his title defence in Rue slowly, but after coming from 4-1 down against world No.9 Olson in a rematch of the 2014 final the British No.1 and world No. 5 went on to seal a 7-5, 6-1 victory. Reid now faces world No. 2 Stephane Houdet of France in his semi-final.

A year on from earning his first career win over a world top 10 ranked senior opponent when he beat Frenchman Nicolas Peifer in the first round in Rue, world No.1 junior Alfie Hewett faced Peifer again in the last eight this time. However, Peifer proved too strong on this occasion, advancing to the semi-finals 6-1, 6-1.

Second seeds Shuker and Whiley had to wait until the end of the opening set of their doubles semi-final against Diede de Groot of the Netherlands and Kgothatso Montjane before securing the crucial breakthrough that gave them the advantage and it was a similar story in the second set as they sealed a 6-3, 6-4 victory that will means they will face Dutch tops seeds Jiske Griffioen and Aniek van Koot in the final.

Josh Cooper’s junior singles challenge came to an end in the semi-finals against Spain’s top seed Martin de la Puente, de la Puente advancing 6-0, 6-1.

Jordanne Whiley won her all-Brit singles quarter-final against Lucy Shuker as all the top seeds reached the women’s last four in Rue.

Meanwhile, Josh Cooper advanced to the junior singles quarter-finals and junior doubles semi-finals.

World No.4 Whiley beat world No.7 Shuker 6-0, 6-1 in a high quality match that was a lot closer than the final score suggests. Whiley plays Dutch world No.2 Aniek van Koot for a place in the final, having won two of her previous four matches against van Koot this season.

Shuker and Whiley will now be on the same side of the net when they team up to play Diede de Groot of the Netherlands and Kgothatso Montjane of South Africa in the women’s doubles semi-finals.

However, Alfie Hewett and Gordon Reid’s hopes of reaching the Baie de Somme men’s doubles final for the second successive year came to an end, despite a promising start to their semi-final. Hewett and Reid slipped to a narrow 5-7, 6-1 (10-5) loss to Joachim Gerard of Belgium and Stefan Olsson of Sweden. Reid now plays Olsson in the men’s singles quarter-finals, while Hewett plays Frenchman Nicolas Peifer.

Cooper met fellow Brit Ruairi Logan in the first round of both the junior singles and the junior doubles. Cooper won a closely contested singles match 6-3, 7-6(1) to earn a quarter-final against Spanish top seed Martin de la Puente. Meanwhile, Cooper and Zoe Maras of France edged two tie-breaks against Logan and Sam Schroder of the Netherlands for a 7-6(5), 7-6(5) victory that sets them up for a semi-final against Dutchman Ruben Spaargaren and Jef Vandorpe of Belgium, the second seeds.

Alfie Hewett and Lucy Shuker joined Gordon Reid and Jordanne Whiley in the men’s and women’s singles quarter-finals on the opening day of the Open de la Baie de Somme, with Shuker setting up an all-Brit women’s quarter-final against Whiley.

World No.7 Shuker had to overcome a tough first round challenge from Diede de Groot of the Netherlands and battled back from 4-1 down in the final set to beat de Grot 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. With Whiley having a bye into the last eight, a Brit is now guaranteed a place in the semi-finals.

A year on from Hewett beating Nicolas Peifer of France in straight set in his first round match in Rue for his first career win over a senior world top 10 ranked opponent, Britain’s world No.1 junior will play Peifer again, but in the quarter-finals this year. Hewett beat Martin de la Puente of Spain 6-2, 7-5 in his first round match this year, which pitted the world’s top two ranked junior players against each other.

After his first round bye defending champion Reid will play Sweden’s Stefan Olsson for a place in the semi-finals, while Hewett and Reid play Belgian Joachim Gerard and Olsson for a place in the men’s doubles semi-finals.

Gordon Reid, Alfie Hewett, Jordanne Whiley and Lucy Shuker contest the men’s and women’s events at the 2015 Open de la Baie de Somme in Rue, France, the final major tournament before the ranking cut-off for the year-end NEC Wheelchair Tennis Masters in London. Meanwhile, young Brits Josh Cooper and Ruairi Logan contest the junior events at the ITF 1 Series tournament.

Reid aims for a hat-trick of men’s singles titles in Rue and also partnered Hewett to the final of the men’s doubles in 2014. Shuker and Whiley were quarterfinalists and semifinalists, respectively, in the women’s singles last year and both players also reached the final of the women’s doubles with different partners, Shuker and Dutchwoman Marjolein Buis lifting the title. This year London 2012 bronze medallists Shuker and Whiley pair up for the women’s doubles.
