Hunt wins PTR Championships women's doubles title

Louise Hunt partnered Germany’s Katharina Kruger to their third women’s doubles title together in 2015 as Marc McCarroll and David Phillipson finished runners-up in the men’s doubles at the PTR Championships.

With the third day of play lost to heavy rain, the last day of competition was a busy one for all players, with singles and doubles semi-finals and finals to play.

Hunt and Kruger lived up to their top seeding for the women’s doubles, following up a 6-2, 6-3 semi=-final win over American duo Shelby Baron and Mackenzie Soldan with a  6-2, 6-4 win over the second seeds, Emilie Chene of France and Miho Nijo of Japan, in the final.

McCarroll and Phillipson also reached the men’s doubles final with relative ease after beating Canada’s Eric Gilbert and Yoann Quilliou 6-2,6-2 in the last four. However, Japanese top seeds Takuya Miki and Satoshi Saida proved took strong in the final and took the title 7-5, 6-2.

After his quarter-final win over third seed Saida in the men’s singles, Phillipson saw hi challenge come to an end in the semi-finals after slipping to a 6-2, 6-2 loss to Australian second seed Adam Kellerman. Hunt’s women’s singles challenge also ended in the semi-finals after a 6-2, 7-5 loss to American third seed and eventual women’s singles champion Emmy Kaiser.

David Philipson upset the third seed to reach the men’s singles semi-finals on the second day of play on Hilton Head, Louise Hunt made a winning start to reach the women’s singles semi-finals and McCarroll and Phillipson advanced to the men’s doubles semi-finals.

Phillipson beat Japan’s Satoshi Saida 6-3, 6-4, earning himself a men’s singles semi-final against Australian second seeds Adam Kellerman.

After his opening loss to the top seed, McCarroll also moved into the consolation singles semis after beating Belgian Mike Denayer 6-3, 6-1. McCarroll plays Yoann Quilliou of France next.

Phillipson and McCarroll also made a winning start to their men’s doubles title defence, defeating American duo Steve Baldwin and Chris Herman 7-5, 6-1. The British second seeds meet Canada’s Eric Gilbert and Quilliou for a place in the final.    

Hunt opened her women’s singles challenge with a 6-1, 6-2 win against the USA’s Marianne Page. Second seed Hunt will play American third seed Kaitlyn Verfuerth in the semi-finals. Hunt and Germany’s Katharina Kruger have a bye into the women’s doubles semi-finals, where they will face American duo Shelby Baron and Mackenzie Soldan.

David Phillipson made a winning start on Hilton Head, although Marc McCarroll bowed out after a tough draw against the top seed.

Phillipson stretched his unbeaten record against the higher ranked Australian No.2 to three matches as their first head-to-head since 2011 ended in a 6-2, 6-2 victory for the British No.4. Phillipson plays Japanese third seed Satoshi Saida in the quarter-finals. McCarroll’s tournament began against Japanese opposition and despite a good effort from the British No.3 he slipped to a 6-4 6-3 loss to world No. 9 Takashi Sanada.

McCarroll and Phillipson, second seeds for the men’s doubles, begin their doubles campaign on the second day of play, when Louise Hunt also starts her tournament.

Marc McCarroll, David Phillipson and Louise Hunt carry British hopes into the PTR Wheelchair Championships on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, one year on from all three players winning doubles titles at the ITF 2 Series event.

McCarroll and Phillipson lived up to their top seeding to win the men’s doubles title in 2014, while Phillipson reached the men’s singles final after beating McCarroll in an all-Brit semi-final. Hunt partnered the USA’s Emmy Kaiser to win the women’s doubles in 2014, upsetting the top seeds Lucy Shuker and Francisca Mardones in the final. Hunt will aim to succeed Shuker as the women’s singles champion on Hilton Head after the two Brits met in the first round last year.

Hunt is second seeed for the women's singles on Hilton Head this year and has a bye into the quarter-finals. McCarroll plays Japanese top seed Takashi Sanada and Phillipson plays Australia's Ben Weekes in the first round of the men's singles.
