Gordon Reid

30/01/14

Gordon Reid made it back-to-back ITF 1 Series men’s singles titles, while Jordanne Whiley and her South African partner Kgothatso Montjane claimed a second successive women’s doubles title as the Pensacola Open drew to a close.

After his 6-2, 6-2 win over Argentina’s Gustavo Fernandez in the final of the Cajun Classic, top seed Reid beat the world No. 5 6-4, 6-3 this time to leave the USA having taken his tally of ITF 1 Series titles to four in the last six months

With Whiley and Montjane set to take on fellow Brit Lucy Shuker and Dutchwoman Jiske Griffioen in the women’s doubles final, Griffioen withdrew from the final with a back injury to give Whiley and Montjane a second ITF 1 Series title in as many weeks after they had beaten the same opponents in the Cajun Classic final.

Reid and Fernandez were runners-up in the men's doubles after playing their semi-final and final in the same day. Second seeds Reid and Fernandez beat fourth seeds Frederic Cattaneo of France and Martin Legner of Austria 7-6(1), 6-0 in the semi-finals, but after winning the first set of the final they were edged out in a championship triebreak by third seeds Joachim Gerard of Belgium and Nicolas Peifer of France.

Meanwhile, Antony Cotterill was a runner-up in the quad doubles in Pensacola for the second successive year after the Brit and the USA’s Greg Hasterok had to withdraw from their scheduled final against American top seeds Nick Taylor and David Wagner.

Pensacola Open Singles Draws

29/03/14

Gordon Reid reached his second successive ITF 1 Series men’s singles final in the USA on Saturday’s action-packed penultimate day of play in Pensacola, while Jordanne Whiley and Lucy Shuker ensured there will be a British winner for the second successive weekend in the women’s doubles and Antony Cotterill moved into the quad doubles final.

After heavy rain washed out Friday’s schedule third day of play, top seed Reid beat seventh seed Frederic Cattaneo of France 6-2, 6-3 in his quarterfinal and recovered from a set down to prevail 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 against Dutch fourth seed Maikel Scheffers in his semi-final. World No. 3 Reid will now bid to repeat his win over Argentina’s world No. 5 Gustavo Fernandez in Sunday’s final.

Going into the last day of play, the men’s doubles is still at the semi-final stage, with second seeds Reid and Fernandez set to play Cattaneo and Martin Legner of Austria for a place in the final. However, Marc McCarroll and South Africa’s Evans Maripa saw their doubles challenge end in the quarter-finals against Dutch top seeds Maikel Scheffers and Ronald Vink.

The women’s doubles final will be a repeat of last weekend’s Cajun Class title decider as Whiley and South Africa’s Kgothatso Montjane take on Shuker and Dutchwoman Jiske Griffioen after both seeded partnerships eased through their semi-finals to ensure that there will be a British winner in the event for the second successive week. Whiley and Montane will be attempting to add to their triumph at the Cajun Classic, but Whiley saw her women’ singles ambitions end in the semi-finals as Dutch second seed Aniek van Koot advanced 6-2, 6-2.

Jamie Burdekin’s hopes of a second successive quad singles title ended when the Cajun Classic champion had to withdraw from his scheduled quarter-final in Pensacola Open due to injury. However, there was better news for Cotterill and his American partner Greg Hasterok in the quad doubles. The second seeds beat the USA’s Marc McLean and Japan’s Shota Kawano in the semi-finals and will face American defending champions and top seeds Nick Taylor and David Wagner in the final.

Jordanne Whiley

27/03/14

Jordanne Whiley moved into the women’s singles semi-finals at the Pensacola Open on the second day of play, while Jamie Burdekin won his all-British contest against Antony Cotterill to reach the quad singles quarter-finals and Gordon Reid eased into the men’s singles quarter-finals.

Fourth seed Whiley earned a comprehensive 6-3, 6-0 win over Emmanuelle Morch of France and the world No. 6 will now play world No. 4 Aniek van Koot of the Netherlands for a place in the final.

World No. 5 Burdekin beat world No. 8 Cotterill 6-3, 6-3 and will go on to play Canada’s Gary Luker for a place in the semi-finals, where Burdekin could be set for a rematch of his Cajun Classic singles final last weekend against American David Wagner, in which Burdekin beat the world No. 1 for the second time in his career.

Top seed Reid opened his men’s singles challenge with a 6-0, 6-0 victory against Brazil’s Mauricio Pomme. World No. 3 Reid plays French seventh seed Frederic Cattaneo in his quarter-final.

Marc McCarroll reached the men’s doubles quarter-finals partnering South Africa’s Evans Maripa. McCarroll and Maripa will play Dutch top seeds Maikel Scheffers and Ronald Vink in the last eight after defeating Belgium’s Mike Denayer and Austria’s Dan Kleckner 7-5, 6-0. Reid and Argentina’s Gustavo Fernandez are second seeds for the men’s doubles and have a bye into the last eight

There was better news for Cotterill and his American partner Greg Hasterok in the quad doubles as they moved into the semi-finals after a 7-5 6-1 win over Canadians Sarah Hunter and Gary Luker. The second seeds will face the USA’s Marc McLean and Japan’s Shota Kawano in the semi-finals. However, Burdekin and Australia’s Dylan Alcott bowed out to defending champions Nick Taylor and Wagner, who they played in last week’s Cajun Classic final

Lucy Shuker and her Dutch partner Jiske Griffioen are top seeds for the women’s doubles, with Whiley and South Africa’s Kgothatso Montjane starting the event as second seeds as they seek to follow up their victory at the Cajun Classic.

26/03/14

Jordanne Whiley reached the women’s singles quarter-finals on the first day of play in Pensacola, earning a comfortable 6-1, 6-1 win over Dutchwoman Michaela Spaanstra. Fourth seed Whiley will meet Emmanuelle Morch of France in the last eight.

However, Lucy Shuker and Marc McCarroll both slipped to early losses in their singles events after tough draws. World No. 8 Shuker was beaten 6-3, 6-3 by South Africa’s world No. 7 Kgothatso Montjane in the only first round women’s singles match to feature to world top 10 ranked players.

Meanwhile, after finishing runner-up to Ronald Vink in the men’s consolation singles at last week’s Cajun Classic, McCarroll met the Dutchman in the first round in Pensacola for the second time in three years. The British No. 2 took the former world No. 3 to a third set for the second time in his career, but Vink progressed 6-2, 3-6, 6-0.

Gordon Reid, Jamie Burdekin and Antony Cotterill all begin their men’s singles and quad singles campaigns on Thursday’s second day of play, when the doubles events also get underway.

25/03/14

After Gordon Reid, Jamie Burdekin and Jordanne Whiley secured a hat-trick of titles for British players in the men’s singles, quad singles and women’s doubles at the Cajun Classic, the trio head six players on the Tennis Foundation’s Wheelchair Tennis Performance Programme who will vie for titles in Pensacola in the second of back-to-back ITF 1 Series tournaments.

World No. 3 Reid will be top seed for the men’s singles, with British No. 2 Marc McCarroll aiming to build on his runners-up placing in the men’s consolation singles at the Cajun Classic.

After his second career win over American world No. 1 David Wagner at the Cajun Classic to win his first ITF 1 Series quad singles title, Burdekin will be hoping for another impressive performance, having returned to his career best ranking at No. 5 this week. World No. 8 Antony Cotterill is fourth seed for the quad singles and faces Burdekin in an all-British first round-match.

World No. 6 Whiley and world No. 8 Lucy Shuker carry the British hopes in the women’s singles after both being quarter-finalists at the Cajun Classic, where they both also reached the women’s doubles final before Whiley prevailed with her South African partner Kgotathso Montjane. Whiley is fourth seed for the women's singles.
