Oxfordshire 12&U County Cup review

The boys 12&U County Cup event took place at Halton and the 12&U girls team were playing at Northampton on the weekend of 30^th June and 1^st July.  Both teams were competing against Herts and Bucks on day one and Middlesex and Gloucs on day two.

Girls Captain, Liz Bamber, said “we were up against it…however, there were some fine performances and a good 3-1 win against Gloucs improved team spirits, as we had gone down to the other 3 counties without winning a rubber”  The girls finished fourth in their group.

Annabelle Denly fought hard at number 1 against very strong opponents; playing doubles with Evie had a great game against Middlesex taking the second set into a tie break.  Lauren Keeler put in solid performances and had a good win against the Gloucs number 2 for the loss of only 2 games.  Raia Jagger competed well in her 2 singles matches taking the Herts number 3 to a close tie break in the first set, fighting hard all the way.  She and Lauren had a very pleasing doubles win against the Gloucs pair working so well as a team it was a joy to watch. Evie Phillips played an outstanding match against the Bucks number 3 changing tactics to take the second set 5-3 and even having a match point.  Her win against the Gloucs number 3 made up for her disappointment.

The boys started with a 3-1 loss to Herts, Ben losing in a match tie break 3rd set with Guy Mobey winning in two very close sets which was the performance of the day.  Next was Bucks, Jon said “we knew we could get a win against them.”  Isaac and Ben won their singles with the other two rubbers being lost in three sets meaning we had a match tie break to play to decide the match. Ben and Isaac held their nerve very well to win 10-5 to win.

Middlesex proved too strong. We had Gloucs to play last and knowing if we could beat them we would finish 3rd in the group overall. Guy and Louis won their singles, with three set loss for Isaac in the other singles and a doubles loss meant another match tie break to decide the result of the match.  Louis and Guy stepped up and won 10-4 giving Oxfordshire 3^rd place in the group.

The next County Cup is 9&Under's on Saturday 21st July 2012.
