Aegon 18U County Cup 2013

Wednesday, March 27, 2013

The beginning of the month saw the Oxfordshire 18U teams compete in the Aegon County Cup.

A very tough weekend for the girls in Shrewsbury saw Oxfordshire relegated without a win to division 5.  Ed Isard, Captain, was impressed how positive the girls remained, how much effort they put in on court and what a great team spirit developed over the weekend.

A blend of absences, younger players (four debuts) and injuries were the main causes for relegation this year.  With a new core of players gaining valuable experience the following year will hopefully be a better one for the girls (and Ed!).

Unfortunately it was relegation too for the Boys team who travelled to Sunderland. Despite beating Northamptonshire, the boys suffered relegation by one rubber ‘Gutting’ said team Captain Jon Maskens after 5-4 defeat on the final day.  ‘This was the closest group I've ever seen in both men’s and juniors county cups’ which created a thrilling weekend of tennis for the boys, and they certainly deserve to bounce back next year.

Once again a great team attitude and debuts for three players keeps the future for boys looking good.
