The May bank holiday weekend saw the Oxfordshire boys and girls 14U teams competing in the Aegon County Cup.
The boys travelled to Southampton where they met teams from Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Northamptonshire.
After defeats in the first two days against strong Bucks and Northants sides, the boys faced a 5th/6th play-off with neighbours Berkshire. After 4 gruelling hours in the sun, the singles were level at 2-2 and the play-off declared a draw. Good first wins for Alex and Toby but tough matches for Harrison in top singles against National top 25 player and agonisingly close for Cameron at 2.
Our girls team competed against Middlesex, Northamptonshire, Hereford & Worcestershire in their tie in Malvern where they were fourth out of six.
The girls improved on last years peformance in the sunshine of Malvern. Ignoring the 6-0 loss to an International Middlesex team, Oxon girls beat Northants 5-1 on day 2, winning all four singles. Day 3 saw the girls narrowly lose 4-2 to H&W in the 3rd/4th play-off with Lucy winning a great singles and a top doubles win by Evie & Taysie in a final set tie-break.
‘A very enjoyable weekend for all’ said Ed, team Captain, ‘great to have a team of the right age’ with four girls moving out of 14’s at the end of the year and Evie and Annabelle getting wins and experience for the 2014 campaign.
