As well as the start of the tennis season, May has seen the staging of the 2012 Tennis Wales/Monmouthshire County Council Primary Schools Mini Tennis competitions by the clubs and coaches in Abergavenny, Monmouth and Usk. The events gave over 150 primary school children the opportunity to spend the afternoon at one of their local tennis clubs and mix with other children of a similar age. Many children were trying tennis for the first time so core skills sessions and tennis games were put on in addition to the competitions themselves to give everyone the chance to improve and gain familiarity with a racket in the hand. As well as enjoyment of the game, the children were judged by the coaches to have shown a great improvement in their tennis and understanding of tennis in one afternoon alone.
