LTA colleagues, volunteers and British tennis players have demonstrated their commitment to equality and inclusion by signing up to the Government’s Sport Charter to tackle homophobia and transphobia in sport.
The Charter was created in February 2011 with the full support and backing of the founding signatories; the LTA, Rugby League, the Football Association, Rugby Football Union, and the England and Welsh Cricket Board.
Signing the Charter commits the LTA, other sporting bodies and individuals to actively challenge any and all forms of homophobic or transphobic abuse or discrimination. The LTA has used the charter to actively promote the inclusion of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people to British tennis and were recognised for their contribution to LGBT inclusion at the Stonewall Awards in November 2011.
The LTA’s Equality and Diversity Manager Dale Park said: “It’s fantastic to have so many colleagues, volunteers and elite players sign the Charter. We have seen great support from the LTA with the CEO, President and Deputy President all signing the Charter along with high profile players Elena Baltacha and Anne Keothavong, and former player Katie O’Brien. This sets a great example to everyone who plays, coaches and watches tennis on the type of environment we expect across British tennis.”
All Places to Play are encouraged to support and endorse the Charter to their members. Copies of the Charter can be download and displayed in clubhouses and you can also support the Charter by “liking” the Charter’s Facebook page.
