Shelley Park is a Beacon for tennis in Bournemouth

Summer tennis was launched in style in Bournemouth at the weekend as Shelley Park was awarded the prestigious ‘Beacon’ award by the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) and Tennis Foundation.

The site was awarded the status as part of the AEGON Tennis Parks programme and to achieve this status, facilities must also offer access to quality, affordable coaching as well as regular competitions for all ages and abilities.

The Beacon plaque was presented to Ed Alexander from Bournemouth Council by James Deem, the LTA Tennis Development Manager for Dorset.

Ed Alexander said: “This has been a great opportunity for us to improve the offer of tennis within the community and we are delighted that Shelley Park has been awarded this recognition.

“We have been working closely with the LTA and The West Hants Club to improve the standard of tennis facilities in the local area. We encourage residents, of all ages and abilities, to get involved and reap the health rewards of playing tennis on the courts Bournemouth has to offer.”

The presentation formed part of Shelley Park’s open day where around 50 people of all ages and abilities picked up a racket to try out the sport. Nearby site Bournemouth Gardens also offered local adults the chance to try out the sport to highlight their top quality tennis facilities.

James Deem said: “Shelley Park richly deserves its beacon status. The team have worked tremendously hard to make this a success and to provide affordable access for tennis for the community.”

The AEGON Parks Tennis programme aims to increase community access to tennis in parks and communities nationwide. Delivered by the LTA and Tennis Foundation, AEGON Parks Tennis is a key programme in British tennis’ drive to increase participation and grow tennis at all levels. The long-term aim is to have an AEGON Parks Tennis site acting as a centre of community tennis excellence in each of the local authority areas in Britain.
