Halep dethrones Kvitova in New Haven

Simona Halep produced a superb performance to see off defending champion Petra Kvitova 6-2, 6-2 and win the New Haven Open at Yale.

Third seeded Kvitova came out firing and held two break points in each of Halep’s opening service games. However the Romanian held firm and converted her first break point in the fifth game when Kvitova sent a wild forehand drive volley wide.

Unseeded Halep broke the 2011 Wimbledon Champion again in the seventh game and clinched the opener a game later with a forehand winner on her first set point.

21 year-old Halep started the second set with an angled forehand winner on break point and went up 3-0 when Kvitova fired a backhand over the baseline.

The Czech reigning champion ended a nine game streak to hold for 1-4. Two games later Halep struck a forehand winner to setup three match points and converted the first with an ace to seal her 4th WTA singles title.

Melzer takes Winston-Salem crown

Jurgen Melzer won the Winston-Salem Open when Gael Monfils retired in the final trailing 6-3, 2-1.

In a battle between two former top 10 players Melzer broke in the second game when Monfils sent a backhand wide into the tramlines. Melzer served out the set with a service winner on set point in the ninth game.

The Austrian broke for 2-1 in the second with a winning backhand volley before Monfils was forced to stop due to a left hip injury.

The victory gives Melzer a 5th ATP World Tour singles title and his first on outdoor hard courts.
