Vinci trumps Errani in Palermo

At the tenth attempt Roberta Vinci won her home town tournament in Palermo with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 victory over doubles partner Sara Errani at the XXVI Italiacom Open.

Second seed and World No.11 Vinci came from a break down to win the opening set but saw top seeded defending champion Errani race 5-1 ahead in the second and level the match.

30 year-old Vinci opened a 4-0 lead in the decider and held off an Errani fight back to win after two hours and 11 minutes.

  • The Italian now holds a 9-1 record in WTA singles finals with her only loss coming against Francesca Schiavone at Barcelona in 2010

Mahut edges out Hewitt in Newport

Nicolas Mahut won his second career title at the Hall of Fame Tennis Championships in Newport, Rhode Island, with a battling 5-7, 7-5, 6-3 victory over former World No.1 Lleyton Hewitt.

Both players had won semi-finals earlier in the day and then fought out a thrilling final on the grass.  Having taken the opening set Hewitt served for the match at 5-4 in the second only to see the Frenchman fight back.

Fourth seed Hewitt also led by an early break in the decider but Mahut reeled him and served out the match to love after two hours and 20 minutes. 

31 year-old Mahut also won on the grass of  s-Hertogenbosch before Wimbledon.

  • The Frenchman had lost both previous meetings with Hewitt in straight sets in 2008
  • In four weeks Mahut has improved his singles ranking by 165 places from 240th to 75th

Fognini battles to win Stuttgart crown

Fabio Fognini won his maiden ATP World Tour singles title at the MercedesCup in Stuttgart with a come from behind 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 victory over Philipp Kohlschreiber.

Second seed Kohlschreiber edged a tight first set, including five breaks of serve, to take the lead but Fognini responded with a break at the start of the second set en route to levelling proceedings.

The fifth seeded Italian carried the momentum into the decider and built a 4-1 lead. Kohlschreiber fought back but Fognini held firm on serve in the tenth game to triumph after two hours and seven minutes.

Halep continues hot form in Budapest

Simona Halep lifted her 3rd WTA singles title in five weeks with a 6-3, 6-7(7), 6-1 victory over Yvonne Meusburger at the Hungarian Grand Prix in Budapest.

Having taken the first set the 3rd seeded Romanian led 6-3 with three match points in the second set tie-break.  Meusburger fended them off and levelled the match only to see Halep go on to dominate the decider.

Halep was also victorious on clay in Nürnberg after Roland Garros.

  • Halep was ranked 64th heading into Rome in May; having now won 22 of her last 25 matches she moves up to a new career high of 23rd this week
  • The Romanian is the second woman after Serena Williams to lift 3 WTA singles titles in 2013

Berlocq on top in Bastad

Carlos Berlocq lifted his first ATP World Tour singles title at the SkiStar Swedish Open in Bastad with a 7-5, 6-1 defeat of Fernando Verdasco.

Berlocq initially led 4-1 in the first set before holding off a Verdasco comeback.  Having edged the opener the unseeded Argentinean comfortably took the second to complete victory in an hour and 38 minutes.

  • Berlocq is the ninth man aged over 30 to win an ATP World Tour singles final in 2013
  • The Argentinean is now ranked 46th; nine places off his career high of 37th set in March 2012
