Haas ends long wait for Munich title

Thirteen years after finishing runner-up Tommy Haas won the BMW Open in Munich for the first time with a 6-3, 7-6(3) victory over compatriot Philipp Kohlschreiber.

German No.1 Haas, finalist earlier in the year in San Jose, broke in the fourth game en route to taking the opening set after 31 minutes.

The third seed broke in the opening game of the second set and served for the title at 5-4 in the second only to see defending champion Kohlschreiber strike back by forcing an error with an angled crosscourt forehand.

35 year-old Haas rebounded to dominate the tie-break to clinch his 14th career singles title, and fourth on German soil, after an hour and 23 minutes.

Wawrinka overpowers Ferrer in Oeiras

Stanislas Wawrinka was in top form at the Portugal Open to defeat David Ferrer 6-1, 6-4 and lift the title in Oeiras.

Wawrinka converted his sixth break point in a lengthy second game and the Swiss No.2 broke the World No.4 again in the fourth game when Ferrer netted a backhand.  

The No.2 seed took the opener on his first set point when Ferrer was off the mark with an attempted lob.

In a tighter second set games went with serve until Wawrinka broke Ferrer in the ninth game.  The 28 year-old sealed his 4th career singles title by holding serve to love.

  • The Swiss No.2 had not beaten Ferrer on clay since Barcelona in 2006 and reduces the Spaniard’s head-to-head lead to 7-4

Pavlyuchenkova recovers to lift Oeiras crown

Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova won her first clay court title at the Portugal Open in Oeiras with a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Carla Suarez Navarro.

Fourth seeded Suarez Navarro, who held match points in the 2012 final, began the stronger and broke in the opening game and had opportunities to lead by a double break.

Pavlyuchenkova saved a set point at 3-5 before Suarez Navarro missed two set points serving for the set at 5-4. After levelling the Russian third seed moved ahead and broke Suarez Navarro to love in the twelfth game with a forehand return winner. 

Pavlyuchenkova dominated the second set with two breaks of serve and clinched her 5th career singles title with a crosscourt forehand winner.
