Fletcher and Brookes reach doubles quarter-finals at Deaflympics

Bethany Brookes and Catherine Fletcher eased into the women's doubles quarter-finals on the second morning of the 22nd Summer Deaflympics in Sofia, Bulgaria after the 2012 European Championships silver medallists beat India's Nishtha Dudeja and Shilipi Jaiswal 6-0, 6-2 in their opening match.

With Brookes playing her first ever match at the Deaflympics and Fletcher looking to build on her first round women's singles victory on Friday's first day of competition, the British duo produced a polished performance to earn a place in the last eight.

"We were both really pleased with the result today and other than a short lapse in concentration in the 2nd set felt we played well," said Brookes. "I'm really looking forward to building on this and hopefully doing the same in the next round."

Brookes and Fletcher will now play Italian fourth seeds Barbara Oddone, the multiple women's singles gold medallist, and Susanna Ricci Bitti, who won the women's doubles bronze medal together at the 2009 Deaflympics in Taipei.

Sunday will see Brookes back in action for her first singles match while Peter Willcox also starts his singles campaign before teaming up with Lewis Fletcher in the men's doubles.
