Murray then went on to Melbourne to begin his Australian Open campaign. Murray, who did not drop a set at the 2013 Australian Open until the semi-final stages, sealed his place in the final against world No.1 Novak Djokovic after a 6-4, 6-7(5), 6-3, 6-7(2), 6-2 win over Swiss world No.2 Roger Federer.

In the final Djokovic put Murray’s hopes for a second Grand Slam title to an end after a 6-7(2), 7-6(3), 6-3, 6-2 defeat on Rod Laver Arena.

“I would like to congratulate Novak” said Murray in his post-match interview. “He is a very well deserved winner.”

Murray added to the crowd: “I’ll see you guys next year.”
