Watch a video interview of Oli Golding after he has claimed the AEGON GB Pro-Series Newcastle title
Oliver Golding has been presented with May’s AEGON Player of the Month Award after his achievements in the AEGON GB Pro-Series held in Bournemouth and Newcastle.
At the AEGON GB Pro-Series Bournemouth, Oli Golding was playing in his first pro-final against fellow Brit Andy Fitzpatrick. 18 year-old Golding edged the first set on a tie-break 7-4 and an early break in the second meant Fitzpatrick was serving at 3-5 to stay in the match.
After a marathon game which saw some high quality tennis, the Birmingham player saved five match points, to force Golding to serve out for the match at 5-4. This time Golding was not to be denied, holding serve for a 7-6(4), 6-4 victory, and in the process gain his first professional title.
After the match Golding reflected on how his US Open Junior victory last September, has given him added confidence in finals. He said: “It’s great to get my first pro title under my belt.”
14 days later Oli Golding then claimed the second ITF professional singles title of his career at the AEGON GB Pro-Series after defeating compatriot Dan Smethurst 6-4, 6-1.
Four of the first six games went to deuce before Golding made the decisive move to break Smethurst and then serve out for the first set 6-4. The teenager from London then raced away with the second set, winning it 6-1.
Golding had now won two titles in 14 days and collected 37 ATP points in the space of three weeks.
