World No.1 Novak Djokovic put Andy Murray’s hopes for a second Grand Slam to an end after coming through the Australian Open final in three hours and 40 minutes.
Djokovic, 25, overcame the British No.1 6-7(2), 7-6(3), 6-3, 6-2 on Rod Laver Arena to seal his sixth major, his fourth in Australia.
“I would like to congratulate Novak” said Murray in his post-match interview. “He is a very well deserved winner.”
Murray added to the crowd: “I’ll see you guys next year.”
In the third set, the 25 year-old from Dunblane was clearly grimacing in pain from blisters and a tight hamstring needing treatment at the change of ends.
Djokovic took advantage of Murray’s drop in intensity and clinched the first break of serve in the match after two hours and 52 minutes.
From then on the advantage stayed with the Serb who sealed the win on his serve when Murray netted a backhand.
Commenting on Murray's performance, CEO of the LTA Roger Draper said: “Once again, it’s been a really exciting tournament for British tennis, and Andy continues to lead the way. He’s a phenomenal role model, and we are extremely fortunate to have one of Britain’s greatest sportsmen inspiring more people to play tennis.”
