Federer defeats Andy Murray at the Australian Open

Andy Murray’s 2014 Australian Open came to an end on Wednesday as he was defeated by former World No.1 Roger Federer in Melbourne.

Murray went down in four sets 6-3, 6-4, 6-7(6), 6-3 in a match that lasted three hours and 20 minutes. It looked at one point that Federer was going to wrap up the match in three sets but serving for the match in the third Murray produced some of his best tennis to force a tie break. Up against it again in the tie break, Murray saved two match points to take it into a fourth set.

But Federer wasn’t to be denied as he put constant pressure on the Murray serve in the fourth, including one game that lasted over 18 minutes, and eventually broke and served out the match to move into the semi-finals.

After the match Murray said: “I was proud of the way I fought. I change my tactics a little bit, started playing a little more aggressive, and that was maybe my undoing a little bit at the end, because I started going for my shots to get myself back into the match.”

Andy Murray has been named as part of the Aegon GB Davis Cup Team that takes on the USA later this month.
