Inglot & Huey reach Australian Open quarter-finals

Dominic Inglot & Treat Huey (PHI) moved into the quarter-finals of the Australian Open doubles in Melbourne Park.

Inglot & Huey defeated No.7 seeds Rohan Bopanna (IND) & Aisam-Ul-Haq 6-4, 7-6(1), who had defeated Fleming & Hutchins in the previous round. In a match of very few errors it was Inglot & Huey’s ability to take their chances that made the difference.

Inglot and Huey face either Bryan & Bryan or Butorac & Klaasen in the quarter-finals.

Inglot and Abigail Spears (USA) moved into the second round of the mixed doubles after defeating Hradecka (CZE) & Emmrich (GER) 6-1, 7-6(5). Colin Fleming & Anastasia Rodionova defeated Kuznetsova (RUS) & Zimonjic (SRB) 6-4, 6-4 to reach the second round.

In the girls’ singles No.9 seed Katie Boulter moved into the second round after a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Tatachar Venugopal. Isabelle Wallace joins Boulter in the second round after defeating No.12 seed Hon 6-3, 5-7, 12-10.

Day 6 Highlights

The Upset

Ana Ivanovic caused the shock of this year's Australian Open by stunning World No.1 Serena Williams to move into the quarter-finals. The Serbian 2008 finalist hit back from a set down to knock out the five-time champion and red hot title favourite 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.

Big names

In the Men's draw all four of the top 8 seeds in action booked their alloted places in the quarter-finals with victories for reigning champion Novak Djokovic (2), David Ferrer (3), Tomas Berdych (7) and Stanislas Wawrinka (8). Two-time finalist Li Na sealed her place in the last eight of the Women's draw with a 6-2, 6-0 demolition of Ekaterina Makarova.

Breaking new ground

Flavia Pennetta and Eugenie Bouchard reached the quarter finals in Melbourne for the first time at different stages of their careers. 31 year-old Pennetta fought past ninth seed Angelique Kerber 6-1, 4-6, 7-5 while 19 year-old Canadian Eugenie Bouchard came from a set down to end the the run of Aussie wild card Casey Dellacqua.
