Broady & Edmund one win away from Australian Open main draw

Liam Broady and Kyle Edmund both battled to three set wins over American opponents to reach the final qualifying round of the Australian Open.

Liam endured an epic battle with Jared Donaldson, missing a match point in the second set, only to prevail a 7-6 (4), 6-7 (5), 6-4 winner.

After the match, Liam said: "The last couple of days I've been playing great and I really felt coming into this tournament that I did have the potential to cause a couple of upsets.

"To qualify would mean the world. I'm not even going to think about it as qualifying for my first Slam - I'm just want to beat my next opponent."

On the adjacent court Kyle lost the first set 6-4 to world No. 154 Austin Krajicek before fighting back to take the next two 7-6 (4), 6-2.

Kyle said: "Twice now I've started nervously but all this court time adds up going into the next match. I've put myself in the position where I've got that match to get into the main draw.

"All I can focus on is my processes and what makes me work as a player, and not the outcome."

Up next:

Kyle faces Australian Dane Propoggia who has knocked out fellow Brit Brydan Klein and Irishman James McGee so far. Liam takes on American veteran Michael Russell who is 15 years his senior and has played in the main draw of the Australian Open nine times.

Women's draw:

In the women’s section both Johanna Konta and Naomi Broady faced tough Round 1 draws in overcast conditions at Melbourne Park.

Naomi fell 6-4, 6-3 to Polish former top 30 player Urszula Radwanska while Anna Tatishvili overcame a tight match with Johanna 6-4, 7-5.

The results ensure neither will join Heather Watson, currently in the semi-finals of the singles and doubles at the Hobart International, in the main draw.
