Judy Murray: Australian Open Blog 5

Judy Murray has been back out exploring around Melbourne Park as two of the British juniors started their campaigns.

It was good news for Katie Swan who comfortably made it through to Round 2 but Emily Arbuthnott suffered defeat.

Read Judy's blog from Friday where she has a run in with a chocolate tennis racket!

Katie Swan off to winning start:

Mini blog today folks! I watched Katie Swan winning comfortably in the first round of the girls singles against Jade Lewis, a Kiwi who is the niece of former Wimbledon runner up Chris Lewis.

Tennis is cool!

I then buzzed around the kids show court and marvelled again at how the Aussies are trying to engage fans and make tennis a 'cool' sport for kids.

I even almost signed up for a game on the People's court!

Maverick to be a Top Gun:

But, in the end, I decided to go to the other side of Melbourne Park and watch Andy hitting with the wonderfully named Maverick Banes, a talented young Aussie player. For sure he's going to be famous with a name like that.....not quite sure what Amelie is doing with the pole here?

Double the action:

Then it was off to hang over the back of court 7 which backs onto court 10 and double-dip. I managed to catch Jamie’s mixed doubles with Hao-Ching Chan (which they won from match point down) and Emily Arbuthnott’s opener in the girls singles (which she lost).

British coaches:

I caught a few games of Serena Williams v Elina Svitolina on TV in the player lounge. Good to see British coach Iain Hughes getting a bit of air time. He's coaching Elina now and she took the opening set before bowing out.

Other notable British coaching successes with overseas players here are Jaime Delgado with Gilles Muller and James Davidson with Aljaz Bedene. Nice work boys.

Didn't make it to the kid’s zone! Maybe tomorrow :)
