The LTA and Tennis Foundation will make a ‘legacy pledge’ for every ace served during the 2012 Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in both the singles and doubles competition from 5-12th November.
Through this pledge, tens of thousands of pounds worth of tennis equipment will be put into the hands of young school children from across the capital and help raise further awareness of existing schools programme.
For every ace served during the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals, the LTA and Tennis Foundation will donate £200 worth of tennis equipment to primary schools located across London, including Greenwich, where the ATP’s highly anticipated season-ending tournament will be played over eight days at The O2. The schools identified as part of the 'legacy pledge' will be linked to wider plans being developed within priority boroughs.
Tom Gibbins, Head of Education at the Tennis Foundation said; “This pledge shows our commitment to creating a lasting tennis legacy from London 2012 to world-class events like the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals by providing free equipment to deserving schools across London.
“Last year alone, players served nearly 300 aces at The O2, so that’s a huge number of schools throughout London who will benefit from this pledge. We felt that this was a novel way to encourage those inspired by watching the best players in the world to get more involved in our sport.”
Jonny Marray, who is competing in the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in the doubles competition, said; “This sounds like a fantastic initiative to promote tennis participation and one I'm very keen to support.
'I'll be looking to try and serve a few more aces myself, knowing that with every one I’ll be helping get more kids involved in playing the sport.”
