Kunieda wins fourth British Open title

Shingo Kunieda defeated Gordon Reid in the men's singles final today to claim his fourth British Open Wheelchair Tennis Championships title.

The Japanese world No.3 showed why he is a former world No.1 as he wrapped up a 6-3, 6-1 win on Centre Court to secure his first British Open title since 2009 at Nottingham Tennis Centre.

"I'm really happy with how I played all week and I'm delighted to have won again at the British Open," said the defending Paralympic men's singles champion.

"Gordon has a really powerful game and when he started coming back at me in the second set, I knew I was in a tough match.

"I really love playing in this country and I can't wait to come back in a few weeks and try and defend my title at the London 2012 Paralympic Games."

British No.1 Reid added, ""It was disappointing to lose today, but Shingo is a fantastic player and he did very little wrong today.

"But I'm so pleased that I made it to the final and it's the first time I have achieved that so I'm happy with my overall performance here and I think it has helped my confidence going into the Paralympics."

Meanwhile, Noam Gershony made it a double this week teaming up with Israeli compatriot Shraga Weinberg to win the quad doubles title following his singles success yesterday.

The Israelis defeated Brits Andy Lapthorne and Jamie Burdekin 6-3, 7-5 to win the title for the first time together.

And in the men's doubles there were French champions as Michael Jeremiasz and Stephane Houdet defeated Dutchmen Ronald Vink and Robin Ammerlaan 6-1, 6-2.
