British No. 1 and world No. 3 Gordon Reid will play Canada’s Philippe Bedard on Tuesday’s opening day of the 25th British Open Wheelchair Tennis Championships after the draw was made on Monday evening at Nottingham Tennis Centre.
World No. 3 Reid is drawn in the same half of the draw as Belgium’s defending champion Joachim Gerard, but both players are in different quarters, with Gerard set to play Reid’s fellow Brit Paul Stewart.
Local Nottinghamshire player David Phillipson will play Poland’s Jerzy Kulik in his opening match, while Japan’s world No. Shingo Kunieda will meet Britain’s Steve Crompton.
The seeded players in both the women’s singles and the quad singles have first round byes and Britain’s recent Wimbledon doubles champion and world No. 5 Jordanne Whiley faces fellow Brit Val Fisher for a place in the women’s quarter-finals.
Whiley’s London 2012 bronze medal-winning doubles partner and world No. 10 Lucy Shuker takes on leading Russian junior Viktoriia Lvova, with Japan’s world No. 1 Yui Kamiji, who has partnered Whiley to win all three Grand Slam women’s doubles titles so far this season, starting her bid for her first British Open title against either Brit Laura Coteman or Colombia’s Johana Martinez.
In the quad singles Britain’s world No. 3 Andy Lapthorne will play Romania’s Alaxandru Craciun or Italy’s Alberto Corradi for a quarter-final berth, with the USA’s world No. 1 David Wagner facing Israel’s Werner Pramendorfer or Israel’s Patrick Ben Uriel. South Africa’s world No. 2 Lucas Sithole will begin his British Open title defence against Brit Adam Field or Israel’s Haim Lev.
