Belgium lead Great Britain in Davis Cup tie

Belgium hold the advantage after day one in the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas Euro/Africa Zone Group I tie against Great Britain following victory in both singles rubbers.

World number 59 Olivier Rochus recovered from a set down to defeat Britain's Dan Evans 3-6, 6-4, 7-6(7), 6-4 in the second rubber of the day to consolidate a 2-0 lead for the visitors.

Speaking about Dan Evans after the match Belgium captain Johan Van Herck said; "I see him as true Davis Cup player, he has a lot of guts and a lot of talent."

Evans himself recognised his own playing standard; "I do not think I did much wrong in the match. There were just some points he just played a bit better than me."

In the first rubber of the day Josh Goodall was defeated 6-7(2), 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 by Steve Darcis.

Goodall, who is ranked 185 places lower than his opponent and playing only his second Davis Cup tie, made a promising start to the match and won a close first set in the deciding tie-break 7-6(2).

However the world number 68 rallied as the match progressed, securing early breaks in each of the next three sets to secure victory.

The tie continues on Saturday with the doubles rubber which will see Colin Fleming and Ross Hutchins take on Ruben Bemelmans and David Goffin from 1pm.

Victory in the tie at Glasgow's Braehead Arena would send Great Britain into a World Group play-off.
