Great Britain win Davis Cup doubles rubber against Belgium

The AEGON GB Davis Cup Team secured the doubles rubber in the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas Euro/Africa Zone Group I tie against Belgium to keep their hopes alive of winning the best of five rubber tie.

Colin Fleming and Ross Hutchins defeated Ruben Bemelmans and David Goffin 4-6, 7-5, 6-3, 6-4 at Braehead Arena, near Glasgow on Saturday.

The British pair, who are currently ranked 10th in the ATP Team Rankings, produced a spirited display and had to recover from a set down against their less experienced doubles opponents to win in a match lasting over three hours.

After the match Fleming spoke highly of the Belgian pair; “They were playing very well and we did not find our feet very quickly.”

Also speaking after the match, Captain Leon Smith praised Colin and Ross on their efforts; “They are brilliant to have on the team and they are the most fantastic guys to be around. As players they have so much more to come and this team will just grow and grow.”

Belgium now take a 2-1 lead into the final day of singles matches on Sunday with GB needing two victories in the remaining rubbers to win the tie and secure a place in the World Group play-off.

Josh Goodall takes on world number 59 Olivier Rochus in the opening singles rubber of the day from 1pm.

In the event of this rubber resulting in a Belgian win, after a mimum of four sets, under ITF regulations, the fifth rubber may not be played. The fifth match is currently scheduled to see Dan Evans take on Steve Darcis. 

After their victory Hutchins commented: "I thought yesterday's tennis was of an unbelievable standard. If they (Goodall and Evans) bring that same level tomorrow, we can win this tie 3-2."
