Andy Murray put the Aegon GB Davis Cup Team ahead 1-0 as he defeated Donald Young 6-1, 6-2, 6-3 in the opening rubber of the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas.
Murray, who opened proceedings for GB in their first round World Group tie against USA, looked strong throughout the match taking the first set in 22 minutes.
Left-handed Young attempted to monopolised on his stronger forehand side, but the British world No.6 secured the second set as Young’s unforced error count totted up to 37 after 57 minutes.
The British No.1 was challenged in the sixth game of the third set as he found himself facing two break points at 3-2, 15-40. However 24 year-old Young could not convert as the 2013 Wimbledon Champion saved one with an ace, and a second with a well-executed drop-shot lob combo.
Murray then went on to close out the set 6-3 as he broke the American’s serve in the final game of the match.
Speaking after his win, Murray commented: "It's important to get off to a good start. I obviously went in as favourite and Sam does in the second match, so it puts the pressure on Sam to play a good match and James can hopefully go in a little bit freer."
British doubles player Ross Hutchins told the BBC: "What a start for Great Britain and for Andy Murray. It went exactly to the plan Leon Smith would have wanted. Murray played a superb clay-court tennis match, constructed the points and moved well."
