Fed Cup Explained

The Aegon GB Fed Cup team of Heather Watson, Johanna Konta, Jocelyn Rae and Anna Smith head to Budapest in Hungary looking to clinch one of the two available promotion spots.

Judy Murray’s team have been drawn in Group B of the Euro/Africa Zone Group I alongside Liechtenstein, Turkey and Ukraine with the winner of the group facing whoever comes out on top in Group C.

Here, we take a look at how the Fed Cup by BNP Paribas works.

Euro/Africa Zone World Group I:

  • Great Britain are one of 15 nations hoping for one of the two automatic promotion places on offer
  • Venue - Syma Event and Congress Center in Budapest, Hungary
  • Capacity - 2,000 (Centre Court)
  • Surface - Hard court (Acrylic)
  • Ball used - Wilson US Open

Ties:

World Group and World Group II

Ties are contested in a best-of-five rubbers format and are played over a weekend. There are two singles on Saturday, and then the reverse singles and a doubles on Sunday.

Zone Groups

Ties are contested in a best-of-three rubbers format and are played on one day. There are two singles followed by a doubles.

WORLD GROUP

8 nations competing to win the Fed Cup. First round losers compete in World Group Play-off ties with World Group II winners.

 

WORLD GROUP PLAY-OFFS

8 nations (4 come down from World Group, 4 come up from World Group II). Winners qualify for next year’s World Group, losers contest next year’s World Group II.

 

WORLD GROUP II

8 nations (4 come down from World Group Play-offs, 4 come up from World Group II Play-offs). Winners contest World Group Play-offs, losers play in World Group II Play-offs.

 

WORLD GROUP II PLAY-OFFS

8 nations (4 from World Group II, 1 from Group I Zone Americas and Zone Asia/Oceania, 2 from Group I Zone Europe/Africa. Winners qualify for next year’s World Group II, losing nations contest next year’s Zone Groups.

15 nations (including GB). 2 promoted, 2 relegated.

ASIA/OCEANIA

8 nations. 1 promoted, 1 relegated.

World Group II play-offs

FED CUP STATS

  • In 2015, 99 countries entered to compete in the Fed Cup
  • Was first held in 1963 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the International Tennis Federation
  • The United States of America have won it 17 times, the most of any country
  • Great Britain have been runners up four time, in 1967, 1971, 1972, 1981
  • Only four nations have competed at every Fed Cup: Great Britian, France, Italy and Australia
  • Former Wimbledon champion Virginia Wade played 57 ties in 17 years for GB, winning a combined 63 matches
  • Italy is the only unseeded nation to win the Fed Cup, doing so by beating Belgium 3-2 in the 2006 final
  • Both Martina Navratilova and Margaret Court have unbeaten records in Fed Cup singles rubbers, winning 20 matches.
  • Denise Panagopoulou is the youngest player to have ever competed, turning out for Greece in 1977 aged just 12.
