Andy Murray continues support of The Royal Marsden

Aegon Championships winner Andy Murray is to continue his support for The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity as he resumes his bid for a first Wimbledon title this week.

Andy was a key figure in the Rally Against Cancer event at The Queen’s Club last weekend (Sunday 16 June), supporting best friend and fellow tennis professional Ross Hutchins, who is being treated for cancer at The Royal Marsden.

After the event, which saw Andy joined on court by Tim Henman, coach Ivan Lendl and Tomas Berdych, along with a host of celebrities, he donated his Aegon Championships prize money of £73,000 to the charity.

He is now continuing that support by sporting the name of The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity on his Wimbledon whites.

“Ross has been so brave throughout his diagnosis and treatment for cancer, and I want to support him, and the hospital which has been treating him, as much as I can.

“Last Sunday was a great day for so many reasons, winning the title then taking part in Rally Against Cancer, which has raised an amazing £250,000 so far.

“I want to help raise as much money and awareness as possible so The Royal Marsden can continue the vital work it does, which I've heard all about through Ross.

“After Rally, the natural progression was Wimbledon, and the sleeve patch is just a small way I can show my support for Ross and The Royal Marsden and continue to raise awareness.”

Cally Palmer, Chief Executive, The Royal Marsden, said: “We are incredibly fortunate to have such generous support from patients like Ross and their friends and families. It means so much to the charity, the hospital and our staff and enables us to go above and beyond in providing world-class cancer care for our patients.

“We look forward to seeing Andy in action over the next two weeks at Wimbledon, and also Ross’ return to competitive tennis following completion of his treatment and we deeply appreciate all that Ross and Andy are doing to support The Royal Marsden.”
