Lleyton Hewitt showed his class on grass on Wednesday, beating tenth seed Grigor Dimitrov to progress to the third round of the Aegon Championships.
The Australian, a former champion at The Queen’s Club, came through 6-4, 6-3 in just over an hour to progress to the third round, where he will face American Sam Querrey.
"I thought I played a really smart match," Hewitt said after the match. "My first match here wasn't pretty, but I fought hard and got through it. That's what I needed to do. Then today it was a classy performance."
Of his third round opponent, Hewitt commented: "I've got to be sharp right from the start. He's obviously got a big game, big serve, big forehand. He's gotten better and better each year on grass, I think, as well."
Sixth sixth-seeded Querrey, who won the Aegon Championships in 2010, was the victor in the last meeting between the two players, prevailing in three sets in San Jose earlier this year. The American will be the favourite going into the match, ranked 63 places higher than former Wimbledon champion Hewitt.
Evans produces upset against Nieminen
Meanwhile, British wild card Dan Evans enjoyed his second scalp of the week, beating Finland's Jarko Nieminen in three sets, 6-4, 6-7(6), 6-4.
Evans, currently at number 277 in the world, defied a 240-place ranking gap to progress to the third round, where he will face world number eight Juan Martin del Potro.
"That was a good one to come through," he said after the match. "I think the crowd did real good today. It does put a little bit of pressure on the other players."
Asked for his thoughts ahead of the match against Del Potro, Evans commented: "I have my own goals tomorrow. I don't think I need to share them with everybody. I'm pretty happy with the way I'm playing. I will just go out there and do what I have to do."
Berdych secures comfortable opening win
Tomas Berdych eased through his opening match at The Queen's Club with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over the Netherlands' Thiemo De Bakker.
The second seeded Czech player, a former Wimbledon finalist, will now face Grega Zemlya. The Slovakian, first round conqueror of Briton Kyle Edmund, progressed to the third round on Wednesday with a straight sets victory against Ukraine's Sergiy Stakhovsky.
