Aegon Championships: Day 4

Berdych first through

The Czech world no. 6 secured his place in the quarter finals with a 7-6(2), 6-4 win over Adrian Mannarino. With both players making their third appearance at the Queen's Club, the first set was closely contested, Mannarino saving four set points before Berdych closed the tiebreak out with an ace 7-2.

Berdych had struggled to break Mannarino throughout the first set, despite having seventeen break points. He finally took his chance at the eighteenth, before Mannarino broke back. Berdych was in no mood to go to another tie break though, and hammered down a number of impressive aces to finish the second set 6-4.

Defending Champion Murray knocked out

It wasn't to be for the British no. 1, as he fell to Berdych's Davis Cup partner Radek Stepanek 7-6(10), 6-2. Whilst Murray drew first blood, breaking Stepanek in his first service game, he was unable to carry his momentum through, and lost an agonising first set in a 12-10 tiebreak, having had four set points.

Murray had walked out bidding for his 450th ATP tour win, but Stepanek had other ideas, dominating the second set and fighting off the world no. 5 to earn a place in the quarterfinals against South African seventh seed Kevin Anderson.

Straightforward for Stan

The Swiss world no. 3 made short work of American Sam Querrey in his third round matchup, breaking early in both sets to win 6-2, 6-2 in under an hour. Wawrinka has played less than two hours on court since the start of the tournament, and will face Marinko Matosevic in the quarter finals.

Matosevic ousts another seed

In just over an hour, the world no. 60 secured a place in the quarterfinal with a 6-2, 6-4 win over fifth seed, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. Despite appearing to injure his ankle quite badly, the Australian broke the Frenchman twice to give him a 5-2 lead to serve out the first set.

The current world no. 17 tried to claw it back in the second with only a break down at 0-2, but will have to continue his wait for a grass court title as Matosevic, in only his second appearance at the Queen's Club, held strong and took the final set 6-4.

Tomorrow's Play

Quarterfinals day at the Queen's Club sees a number of intriquing matchups, including fourth seed Grigor Dimitrov taking on eighth seed Alexandr Dolgopolov. The last remaining unseeded man, Marinko Matosevic, will rewarded for his giant-killing antics so far with a tie against world no. 3 Stan Wawrinka.
