Leeds Metropolitan hosts University Tennis Tour

Leeds Metropolitans University hosted the student-only grade three tennis tournament as part of the University Tour on the weekend of the 9th November.

The two day event included a 16 player men’s and an 8 player women’s draw, with all players playing a minimum of 2 matches. The event included players from many different Universities including Durham, Loughborough, Leeds and Leeds Metropolitan in both the men’s and women’s draws.

The tournament got off well for all the men's seeds as they all progressed through to the second round comfortably. Leeds Metropolitan's Matthew Tsang pulled off a big win in the first round against Durhams Sam Lowden to progress into the second round. In the women’s draw the two seeds Laura Steele and Isabelle Hearnshaw progressed into the semi-finals after wins in the quarter-finals.

Paul Johnson came through a tough match against Ben Crichton in the semi-final taking the first set in a tie break to five and going on to take the second set 6-3. Whereas in the other semi-final Sean Evans received a walkover due to an injury to Nick Turnbull. In the women’s draw there was a tight contest between the number one seed Laura Steele and Loughborough’s Laura Feely which saw the number one seed go out of the tournament losing 6-4 6-2.

Sean Evans and Paul Johnson

The men’s final saw two Leeds Metropolitan players competing against each other in a very entertaining final which Sean Evans took 6-1 6-4 against Paul Johnson. In the women’s final Isabelle Hearnshaw took the title after some powerful hitting against Laura Feely to win 6-0 6-2.

I would like to say it was great to see so many players from different Universities taking part in the tournament as this created a great competitive atmosphere within the tournament. We look forward to hosting another University Tennis Tour event next year.
