University Tennis Cooardinater Dominic O’Hara talks to Liverpool John Moores 1st team player Jonny Dow, following a close defeat to the University of Leeds Men’s 1st team.
Final score: Leeds win 8-4
Going into our third week of the BUCS season, all three teams were in action. Our men’s 1st and women’s 1st were looking to continue their strong starts, while our men’s 2nds were hoping to get on the scoreboard after a crushing defeat in their first match.
Our men’s 1st were looking to be playing on the home advantage as the 1st pair comfortably took the opening doubles. Our 2nd pair also started off well by taking the first set; however Leeds levelled and took a very close breaker 10-8. So all to play for in the singles but first blood went to Leeds as they comfortably took the number 3 singles. In the top singles match LJMU 1st player Michael Ajibade continued his impressive unbeaten record by levelling the tie at 4-4.
In his league debut LJMU’s number 2 took a tough loss in two sets and thus giving Leeds a draw as their worst result. The pressure was on for both teams in the final singles and spectators were entertained by a contrast of playing styles, as well as some questionable verbal celebrations! It went the distance but Leeds took the 3rd set 6-2 for the overall win. Our men’s 1st now re-group for their next match against Leeds Met 2nd on November 6th.
It was a successful week for both our women’s and men’s 2nd who beat UCLAN 12-0, and Liverpool Hope 10-2 respectively. Remaining unbeaten so far this year, our women’s look confidently ahead to their next match against Lancaster 1st on November 13th. Joining them will be our men’s 2nd who look to progress in div 3A.
Some of our player’s will be looking for inspiration next week as they head down to the ATP World Tour Finals. Watch out for some hotshots!
