Liverpool hosts University Tour part three

Find out what happened at Liverpool Student Open 2013 which took place over 16th-17th March at Lifestyles Wavertree Tennis Centre.

The University Tennis Tour arrived in Liverpool on 16th March attracting a men's draw of 12 players. There was a broad range of standards involved from students using it as an opportunity to enter their first LTA ratings competition, to those seasoned competitors looking to gain ranking points at the lower end of the ratings scale.

There were students from three different Liverpool Universities who battled it out across two days; however the final was to be between two Manchester based players, with an overwhelming performance by Matt Chadwick to take the title in less than an hour, winning 6-0, 6-0. This event hopes to progress further next year becoming a key competition in the calendars of many Northern universities.

"The competition was great for me as a first time competitor and although I was knocked out in the second round it gave me the chance to play against players far better than me which helped my game tremendously and that made it really enjoyable. I hope to see more tournaments hosted in Liverpool and I'm looking forward to competing again in the future," said Wayne McGrath, 23, who is at Liverpool John Moores University studying BA Business studies with Japanese.

Next up on the University Tennis Tour is The Connaught Club in Chingford, which takes place this weekend. Then we'll break for Easter before returning for the final two events in Loughborough and Cardiff.
