Men's captain Peter Leatherbarrow and University Tennis Coordinator Hayley McClaughlin chat to British Tennis about their recent matches against University of Liverpools Men's 2nds and University of Sheffield Ladies 1sts.
Final score: Chester Men's won 10-2
After the first win of the campaign the week before, the boys were looking to build some momentum in their first away match of the season as they travelled to Liverpool tennis centre. Both men’s pairs won their doubles comfortably, putting the lads 4-0 up after the first round of matches.
On to the singles and Hun Jirapokawin, making his BUCs debut at number 4 looked very confident in winning 6-3 6-3. Hun also hit the shot of the day, a ‘through-the-legs’ winner past both net players in the doubles! A great way to mark his debut in style.
With one more rubber needed for a Chester win, Jamie Titshall maintained his 100% record at No.3 by winning 6-4 6-2 and giving Chester the much needed win. Chester’s No.1, Ben Clarke, lost a very tight match in 3 sets and the No.2, Pete Leatherbarrow, won comfortably in straight sets, making it 10-2 overall.
After the match Jamie Titshall said: “Great performance from the lads today. Solid victory for our first away match.”
Final score: Chester Ladies drew 6-6
The women’s 1st team faced a tough opponent today playing Sheffield 1sts who are second in the league. Number one pair, Hayley McClaughlin and Bethany Windwood got off to a strong start in the first set of the doubles but Sheffield took advantage of the break and took the first set 7-5. Hayley and Beth continued to fight and even after being a break down, Chester took the second set 7-6, and the championship tiebreak 10-4. The second pair, Laura Isherwood and Lilly O’Driscoll, faced tough opponents, and lost 6-2 6-2, although the score didn’t reflect the closeness of the game.
After a long battle on court, number one seed, Hayley McClaughlin, lost 6-3 6-4. Number two seed, Lilly O’Driscoll, took the first set 7-6 and continued to storm to victory winning the second set 6-2. Laura, the number four seed, put up a good fight, but Sheffield were too strong and Laura lost 6-0 6-0. Beth took on the number 3 seed, and went in very strong taking the first set 6-3. Sheffield fought back and took the second set 6-4, but Beth stepped it up again and took the final set 6-3, making it a 6-6 all draw overall.
Bethany Windwood said: “I’m really proud of the girls team today, we were down several times today but fought back hard to get a draw.”
