Marc McCarroll
24/08/13

British No. 2 Marc McCarroll finished runner-up in the men's singles at the Trofeo della Mole as Alfie Hewett won the men's consolation singles and David Phillipson was also runner-up in the men's doubles.

After coming from 3-1 down in the deciding set of his semi-final to secure his first career won over world No. 10 Frederic Cattaneo of France 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, fourth seed McCarroll found Belgian world No. 4 and British Open champion Joachim Gerard too strong in the final, with Gerard winning 6-2, 6-2.

McCarroll was also involved in another tremendous match in the men's doubles semi-finals as he and Hewett attempted to follow up on their victory doubles victory at the Wroclaw Cup in Poland, where Phillipson had been on the other side of the net. However, as the three Brits met again, it was Phillipson who had the upper hand as he partnered Poland's Tadeusz Kruszelnicki to beat second seeds Hewett and McCarroll 7-6(1), 1-6, (10-8) after a deciding championship tie-break.

Third seeds Phillipson and Kruszelnicki took top seeds Frederic Cattaneo of France and Martin Legner of Austria to another championship tie-break in the final. However, a week after missing out against Hewett and McCarroll in Poland, Cattaneo and Legner claimed the title in Turin 4-6, 6-2, (10-6).

Hewett secured victory in the men's consolation singles after winning both his semi-final and final in the same day in two matches played out as short sets. The world No. 1 ranked junior beat Austria's Nico Langmann 4-0, 4-0 in the last four and went on to defeat Korea's Ji-Hwan Lee 5-4(8), 4-1 in the final.

Marc McCarroll and David Phillipson reached the men's singles semi-finals on the third day of play in Turin as Alfie Hewett also advanced to the semi-finals of the consolation singles and all three Brits reached the same semi-final in the men's doubles, guaranteeing that there will be a British player in Saturday's final.

Seventh seed Phillipson secured the outstanding result of the day, coming from a set down to beat Austrian third seed Martin Legner. Last week Phillipson had led Legner 3-0 in the first set of their quarter-final at the Wroclaw Cup in Poland when Legner had to retire after the frame on his tennis wheelchair snapped. This time the Austrian made the better start, but Phillipson fought back to secured a 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 victory.

Phillipson will now play Belgian world No. 4 and top seed Joachim Gerard, the winner of July's British Open in Nottingham.

Fourth seed McCarroll won the important points in his quarter-final against sixth seed Tadeusz Kruszelnicki of Poland to seal a 6-3, 6-3 win and the British No. 2 will now play French second seed Frederic Cattaneo for a place in the final.

In the consolation singles Hewett won his opening match against Italy's Ivan Lion 4-1, 4-0 and will go up against Austria's Nico Langmann in the semi-finals.

After Hewett and McCarroll were on the opposite side of the net to Phillipson in last weekend's Wroclaw Cup final, the three players will meet again to decide who will earn a place in the final in Turin. Second seeds Hewett and McCarroll eased past Korea'sSam-Ju Kim and Ji-Hwan Lee 6-2, 6-0 in their semi-final, while third seeds Phillipson and Kruszelnicki beat French pairing David Dalmasso and Lahcen Majdi 6-3, 6-1.

Marc McCarroll and David Phillipson progressed to the men's singles quarter-finals as the British challenge got underway on the second day of play in Turin.

Fourth seed McCarroll secured a comfortable 6-1, 6-1 opening victory over Mike Denayer of Belgium to book his place in the last eight against Polish sixth seed Tadeusz Kruszelnicki

British No. 3 and seventh seed Phillipson beat Polish opposition in his opening match, defeating Albin Batycki 6-0, 6-2. Phillipson will now come up against Austrian third seed Martin Legner in a quarter-final for the second successive week. Phillipson led Legner 3-0 in the last eight at last week's Wroclaw Cup in Poland when Legner was forced to retire.

Alfie Hewett will got forward to the men's consolation singles as top seed after being edged out by powerful Frenchman David Dalmasso. With Hewett ranked just two places ahead of Dalmasso coming into this week's tournament, the Frenchman secured a narrow 6-4, 6-4 win over Hewett, who will now face Italy's Ivan Lion for a place in the semi-finals of the consolation event.

After a first round bye in the men's doubles, second seeds Hewett and McCarroll are set to play Korea's Sam-Ju Kim and Ji-Hwan Lee for a place in the semi-finals, where they could meet Phillipson and his partner Kruszelnicki. Third seeds Phillipson and Kruszelnicki face the all-French partnership of Dalmasso and Lahcen Majdi in their opening match.
