Heather Watson came through round one in Auckland with a 6-3, 0-0 ret. win over Sorana Cirstea but then fell at the hands of Kiki Bertens of Holland in a three set match on Wednesday.
Watson also lost out in the doubles quarter-finals, beaten 10-5 in the match tie-break.
