Marc McCarroll
15/06/13

Marc McCarroll and Antony Cotterill saw their respective challenges come to an end on Saturday's penultimate day of the Czech Open.

Despite having beaten Austria's Martin Legner twice this season, fourth seed McCarroll was edged out on this occasion as Legner claimed their men's singles semi-final 3-6, 7-5, 7-6(3).

Later in the day McCarroll and Poland's Tadeusz Kruszelnicki were on the end of a narrow loss in the men's doubles semi-finals as the all Polish pairing of Kamil Fabisiak and Piotr Jaroszewski advanced to the final 7-6(0), 2-6, (10-7) after a championship tie-break.

While Cotterill saw his quad singles title defence come to an end against Italy's Marco Innocenti earlier in the week, Innocenti was again on the opposite side of the net as Cotterill had to settle for runners-up honours in the quad doubles. In their decisive round-robin match Innicenti and Alfredo di Cosmo beat Cotterill and Sweden's Marcus Jonsson 6-2, 6-1.

Marc McCarroll moved into the men's singles semi-finals in Prostejov after beating German sixth seed Steffen Sommerfeld 6-4, 6-2. Fourth seed McCarroll faces Austrian second seed Martin Legner for a place in the final, having beaten Legner in the first two of their three matches this season.

However, current world No. 9 Antony Cotterill saw his quad singles title defence come to an end after a 4-6, 6-0, 6-4 loss to former world No. 9. Cotterill still maintains chances of winning the quad doubles title and will partner Sweden's Marcus Jonsson in their second and decisive round-robin match against Innocenti and his fellow Italian Alfredo di Cosmo.

Marc McCarroll and Antony Cotterill have both made winning starts at the Czech Open.

After a first round bye, McCarroll eased into the men's singles quarter-finals when the British No. 2 and fourth seed beat the Czech Republic's Michal Stefanu 6-1, 6-1. McCarroll plays German sixth seed Steffen Sommerfeld for a place in the semi-finals.

McCarroll is also into the men's doubles semi-finals, partnering Poland's Tadeusz Kruszelnicki. The second seeds eased past Austrian duo Joseph Riegler and Nico Langmann 6-1, 6-2 in the quarter-finals and go on to play the all-Polish third seeded pairing of Kamil Fabisiak and Piotr Jaroszewski.

As top seed for the quad singles Cotterill also had a first round bye and will face Italy's Marco Innocenti in the semi-finals.

But Cotterill has begun his quad doubles challenge. The Brit and Sweden's Marcus Jonsson claimed the first of two round-robin matches with ease, defeating Sweden's Petter Edstrom and Austria's Peter Tatschl 6-2, 6-1.

After reaching the men's singles and doubles semi-finals and winning the quad singles and doubles respectively at last week's Polish Open, Marc McCarroll and Antony Cotterill stay in central Europe this week for their second successive ITF 2 Series tournament.

British No. 2 McCarroll is fourth seed for the men's singles, while Cotterill is top seed for the quad singles as he again bids to defend a set of ITF 2 singles and doubles titles he won in 2012.
