Tomas Berdych defeats Andy Murray in Madrid Open
Tomas Berdych defeated Andy Murray 7-6(3), 6-4 in the quarter-finals of the Madrid Masters.
"Tomas is a very good clay court player and it was a close match - I had my chances," said Murray.
Murray was aiming for his first career clay court title but was stopped by the Czech player who converted three of his seven break point opportunities including to love in the fifth game of set two on his way to victory.
"I think I'm playing OK. Some things I would like to do better, but I did play very well in practice in the build-up to this tournament," said Murray, who will overtake Federer to become world number two when the rankings are updated on Monday.
"I played a lot of sets with a lot of tough players and I played very well."
Rafael Nadal reached his seven consecutive final since returning from injury whilst Novak Djokovic was beaten in round two and Roger Federer lost out to Kei Nishikori on Thursday.
Both Murray and Berdych will be competing at the Aegon Championships this June at The Queen's Club, London.

Andy Murray beats Gilles Simon in Madrid Open
Andy Murray defeated Gilles Simon in three sets to move into the quarter-finals of the Madrid Open.
Murray, who turns 26 next week, came through 2-6, 6-4, 7-6(6) to face Czech world No.6 Tomas Berdych in the final eight.
"It wasn't a pretty or my best match, but I won,” said Murray after his match. "I gave myself an opportunity to get through to the semis."

Andy Murray claims 400th career win
Andy Murray has claimed his 400th career win as he beat Germany's Florian Mayer in his opening match at the Madrid Open.
Murray saved five set points in the opening tie-break before coming through 7-6(11), 7-6(3).
The Briton, who had a bye in round one, will play 16th seed Gilles Simon next.
"I was struggling," said Murray after the match. "I think both of us were at the end of the first set, there were so many long points.
"I was finishing a lot of the points very out of breath, and I think that's a combination of the way the points were going, but also it's different playing in altitude. It takes time to get used to that."
Commenting on reaching a milestone in his career Murray added: "It's nice - 400 matches is a lot of matches and I hope I can play a few more in my career. There's not too many guys who have over 500 wins."

World No. 3 Andy Murray is bidding to win his first ATP World Tour clay-court title at the ATP 1000 Mutua Madrid Open. The Briton has won nine ATP World Tour Masters 1000 trophies, most recently in Miami.
