Lucy Shuker cinched her fifth women’s doubles title of the season as Gordon Reid kept his men’s singles title defence on track on the penultimate date of competition in Rue and also partnered Alfie Hewett to finish runners-up in the men’s doubles.

Shuker claimed her second title of 2014 partnering Dutchwoman Marjolein Buis as the duo won a thrilling women’s doubles final featuring Brits on either side of the net. Shuker and Buis beat Jordanne Whiley and South Africa’s Kgothatso Montjane 6-4, 3-6, (10-8) to end the event having beaten both of the seeded partnerships.

Second seed Reid bounced back from a break down to win the opening set of his men’s singles semi-final against Belgian world No. 5 Joachim Gerard on a tie-break and went on to close out a 7-6(4), 6-3 victory that set the world No. 3 up with a final against Sweden’s Stefan Olsson.

Alfie Hewett and Reid, winners over the London 2012 silver medallists and the Dutch second seeds in their men’s doubles quarter-final and semi-final matches, rallied in the second set of the final against top seeds Gerard and Stephane Houdet of France, but Gerard and Houdet went on to take the title  6-1, 6-4.

Meanwhile, Whiley bowed out of the women’s singles in the last four after slipping to a 6-3, 6-4 loss to Germany’s world No. 4 Sabine Ellerbrock and Ian Payne finished fourth with Rafael Patronidis of Greece in the junior doubles.

Shuker and Dutchwoman Marjolein Buis upset the second seeds in their semi-final and after storming to an early 5-2 lead they eventually took the first set against Germany’s Sabine Ellerbrock and Jiske Griffioen of the Netherlands 7-5. The second set followed a similar pattern, but this time Shuker and Buis earned the crucial breakthrough to lead 5-3 before wrapping up a 7-5 6-4 victory.

After dropping the opening game of their semi-final against Dutch duo Diede de Groot Michaela Spaanstra, Whiley and South Africa’s Kgothatso Montjane reeled off the next six games to win the set en route to their 6-2, 6-1 victory.

“I thought it was high quality tennis from both of us. I know Alfie is very confident at the moment after some good results, so I'm pleased with the win,” said Reid.
