Lucy Shuker

14/09/14

British players ended the 2014 PTR Championships with three titles after Lucy Shuker won her fourth women’s singles crown on the final day of competition in Hilton Head.

Top seed Shuker won the women’s title for the fourth time since 2009 after beating Korean fourth seed Ju-Yeon Park 6-3, 6-4 in her final to clinch her second singles title in successive weeks.

With Louise Hunt being part of the winning pairing in the women’s doubles and Marc McCarroll and David Phillipson having also already secured victory in the men’s doubles Phillipson narrowly missed out on adding the men’s singles title after Australia’s Adam Kellerman won their final 6-4, 6-4.

Louise Hunt also finished runner-up in the women's consolation singles after Brazil's Natalia Mayara won the final 6-4, 6-1.

PTR Championships Draws

David Phillipson

13/09/14

David Phillipson will bid to complete a brace of titles on Sunday’s final day of play in Hilton Head after partnering Marc McCarroll to an all-British victory in the men’s doubles, while Louise Hunt and her American partner Emmy Kaiser caused an upset in the women’s doubles final after defeating Britain’s Lucy Shuker and Chile’s Francisca Mardones, the top seeds. However, Shuker remained on track in her bid for the women’s singles title after a straight sets win in her semi-final.

Top seeds Phillipson and McCarroll defeated the unseeded partnership of American David Eads and Australia’s Adam Kellerman 6-4, 6-2 to earn a fifth men’s doubles title for an all-British duo in six years, with McCarroll having previously won the Hilton head title with Gordon Reid on three occasions, while Phillipson partnered Reid to claim the title in 2009.

Phillipson, who’s regained the British No. 3 ranking this week from Alfie Hewett, claimed his sixth win in seven international matches against British No. 2 McCarroll in the men’s singles semi-finals, Phillipson recording a 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 to deny McCarroll a place in his second successive final in Hilton Head.

Fourth seed Phillipson will now meet third seed Kellerman for the second successive week in Sunday’s final as the Brit seeks to follow up his semi-final victory over Kellerman in the Birmingham Canadian Classic. Phillipson will also attempt to become the latest Brit to win the Hilton Head title after Gordon Reid claimed his fifth successive victory at the tournament in 2013.

Second seeds Hunt and Kaiser produced a fine performance to beat top seeds Shuker and Mardones 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 in the women’s doubles final as Hunt gained her second doubles title in Hilton Head, having partnered Shuker to victory in 2011.

World No. 10 Shuker beat Kaiser 6-3, 7-5 in their singles semi-final and now meets Korea’s Ju-Yeon Park in the final as the British No. 2 attempts to win her fourth singles title in Hilton Head since 2009, having finished runner-up to fellow Brit Jordanne Whiley last year.

Hunt will also play Brazil’s Natalia Mayara in the women’s consolation singles final after defeating American Marianne Page 6-3, 6-0 in her semi-final.

Marc McCarroll

12/09/14

All four Brits remain in the hunt for titles after the second day of play in Hilton Head, with Marc McCarroll and David Phillipson set to meet in an all-British men’s single semi-final as well as pairing up to contest the men’s doubles final, while Lucy Shuker is into the women’s single semi-finals and will be on the opposite side of the net to Louise Hunt in the women’s doubles final.

Second seed McCarroll and fourth seed Phillipson both dropped just two games apiece in their men’s singles quarter-finals, McCarroll beating Frenchman Lahcen Majdi 6-2, 6-0 and Phillipson sweep past Japan’s Yusuke Nishimura 6-0, 6-2 as the two Brits set up their first meeting this season on the UNIQLO Wheelchair Tennis Tour. Top seeds McCarroll and Phillipson also beat Brazilians Rafael Medeiros and Mauricio Pomme to book their place in the men’s doubles final against American David Eads and Australia’s Adam Kellerman.

Shuker powered to a 6-0, 6-1 quarter-final win over Colombia’s Johana Martinez to set up a rematch of her decisive contest at last week’s Birmingham Canadian Classic against Emmy Kaiser, when the British No.2 beat the American in three sets. Meanwhile, Shuker and Chile’s Francisca Mardones defeated Korea’s Myung-Hee Hwang and Ju-Yeon Park 6-2, 7-6(6) took book their place in the women’s doubles final. The top seed will now meet second seeds Hunt and Kaiser, who won their semi-final against the USA’s Shelby Baron and Macarena Cabrillana of Chile 6-1, 6-1.

Louise Hunt earned a 6-1, 6-4 win over Dana Mathewson to reach the women’s consolation singles semi-finals, the British No. 1 now facing further American opposition when she takes on Marianne Page.

11/09/14

Marc McCarroll and David Phillipson moved to within a match of a potential all-British men’s singles semi-final after making comfortable starts to their campaigns, with Lucy Shuker also reaching the women’s singles quarter-finals after her all-British first round match. McCarroll and Phillipson also joined forces to reach the men’s doubles semi-finals, while Shuker, Louise Hunt and their respective partners reached the women’s doubles semi-finals.

McCarroll and Phillipson both beat American players, second seed McCarroll defeating Larry Keeler 6-0, 6-0 and fourth seed Phillipson also comfortably overcoming Nick Burnham 6-2, 6-1. McCarroll meets Frenchman Lahcen Majdi and Phillipson plays Japan’s Yusuke Nishimura in his quarter-final. Victory for both Brits will see the meet in the last four.

Shuker plays Colombia’s Johana Martinez for a place in the women’s singles semi-finals after her 6-2, 6-0 win over fellow Brit Louise Hunt in their first round contest. Hunt is now top seed for the women’s consolation singles and plays American Marianne Page in her opening match in the event.

McCarroll and Phillipson started their men’s doubles campaign with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Korea’s Ji-Hwan Lee and Japan’s Yusuke Nishimura. Top seeds McCarroll and Phillipson go on to play Brazil’s Rafael Medeiros and Mauricio Pomme for a place in the final.

Shuker and Chile’s Francisca Mardones moved into the last four of the women’s doubles after beating American Mackenzie Soldan and Lithuania’s Karolina Lingyte. The top seeds play Korean duo Myung-Hee Hwang and Ju-Yeon Park for a place in the final. Hunt and her American partner Emmy Kaiser beat Martinez and American Dana Mathewson 6-2, 6-2 to also reach the semi-finals, in which they will play the USA’s Shelby Baron and Chile’s Macarena Cabrillana.

10/09/14

Marc McCarroll and Louise Hunt join David Phillipson and Lucy Shuker in North America for the next two weeks with the quartet launching a four-fold British challenge in Hilton Head at a tournament that has seen plenty of British success in recent years.

British No. 2 McCarroll, who goes into this week’s tournament buoyed by a new career best men’s singles world ranking of No. 11 this week, was runner-up to Gordon Reid in last year’s al-British men’s singles final in Hilton Head, while partnering Reid to win the men’s doubles. However, Phillipson, runner-up in the Birmingham Canadian Classic last weekend, and McCarroll are drawn in the same half of the men’s singles draw this year.

Also drawn together for the first round of the women’s singles are Shuker and British No. 3 Hunt as Shuker begins her bid to add to her first women’s singles title of the year in Canada last weekend. Shuker is a former women's singles and doubles champion in Hilton Head and last year was singles runner-up to Jordanne Whiley, with whom she also won the women's doubles.
