Antony Cotterill reached the second ITF 1 Series quad singles final of his career on the penultimate day of the Sardinia Open as Alfie Hewett also moved into the men’s doubles final with his French partner Michael Jeremiasz.

World No. 8 and top seed Cotterill improved on his semi-final berth in Sardinia in 2013 after coming through a difficult contest against home favourite Alberto Corradi 7-6(3), 6-4 reach his first singles final of 2014. Cotterill will play Israel’s former world No. 1 Shraga Weinberg for the title.

However, Jordanne Whiley saw her women’s singles and doubles challenges both come to and in the semi-finals. Fourth seed Whiley made a good start in her quest to reach a second successive Sardinia Open singles final before Dutch top seed Jiske Griffioen fought back to win their last four contest 4-6, 6-2, 6-2. Whiley and Griffioen then paired up for the women’s doubles semi-finals, but were edged out in a deciding championship tie-break by the third seeds, Germany’s Sabine Ellerbrock and Italy’s Marianna Lauro, who prevailed 6-0, 0-6, (10-3).

Jordanne Whiley and Antony Cotterill moved into the women’s singles and quad singles semi-finals on the third morning of the Sardinia Open. Whiley beat French seventh seed Charlotte Famin 6-4, 6-4 to book her place in the last four, where the British No. 1 and fourth seed will meet Dutch top seed Jiske Griffioen.

Quad singles top seed Cotterill got his challenge off to a solid start, his 6-4, 6-1 victory over Italy’s Alfredo di Cosmo setting up a semi-final against Italy’s Alberto Corradi.

After taking world No. 5 Joachim Gerard to three sets last week in France, Alfie Hewett was unfortunately not able to do the same this week when the two players again met in the quarter-finals of the men’s singles, with the Belgian second seed advancing 6-2, 6-3.

However, Hewett did move into the men's doubles semi-finals after partnering Frenchman Michael Jeremiasz to a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Spain's Daniel Caverzaschi and South Africa's Evan Maripa. Jordanne Whiley returns to competition in Sardinia for the first time since becoming the first British tennis player to win a calendar year Grand Slam, when completing the set of Australian Open, Roland Garros, Wimbledon and US Open women’s doubles titles with Japan’s Yui Kamiji.

With Kamiji not among the leading players in Sardinia, world No. 6 Whiley is the fourth seed for the women’s singles and has a bye into the last 16 ahead of starting her campaign to try and reach the final for the second successive year.

Alfie Hewett flies the flag for Britain in the men's singles, the world No. 1 ranked junior boosted by taking Belgium’s world No.  5 Joachim Gerard to three sets in the men’s singles quarter-finals at the Open de L’Ile de Re last week. Hewett is the fifth seed in Sardinia and is drawn to potentially meet Gerard again in the last eight. Meanwhile, world No. 8 Antony Cotterill is top seed for the quad singles and has a bye into the last eight this year after reaching the semi-finals in 2013.
