Wawrinka defeats Murray in US Open quarter-finals

Stanislas Wawrinka upset Andy Murray in a straight sets victory in the quarter-finals of the US Open in New York on Thursday.

The Swiss world No.10 was a 6-4, 6-3, 6-2 winner over the defending US Open champion and will take on Novak Djokovic for a place in the final.

After the match the world No.3 reflected: "I'm disappointed, but the year as a whole has been a good one. If someone told me before the US Open last year I would have been here as defending champion, having won Wimbledon and Olympic gold, I would have taken that 100%."

Also on Thursday the run of the British juniors came to an end at Flushing Meadows as Katie Boulter, the last remaining British junior, was beaten in round three of the girls' singles, losing to Japanese 11th seed Mayo Hibi.

Day 11 Highlights

The former champion

World No.1 and 2011 champion Novak Djokovic moved into his seventh consecutive US Open semi-final with victory over Mikhail Youzhny during the night session.  The top seed dropped his first set of the tournament but hit back strongly to come through 6-3, 6-2, 3-6, 6-0.

End of a streak

The Bryan Brothers dream of becoming the first team since 1951 to win a calendar year Grand Slam was ended on Day 11 as the top seeded twins were beaten in the semi-finals.  The Bryans dominated the first set against Leander Paes and Radek Stepanek but the Indian/Czech pairing recovered to win 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.

Taste of revenge

Another pair of American siblings were on court yesterday as Venus and Serena Williams booked the final place in the women’s doubles semi-finals.  The two-time champions avenged their Australian Open loss to Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci as they beat the Italian defending champions 6-3, 6-1 on the Louis Armstrong stadium.
